I will be throwing my hat into the "First Time" boat as well.

JackAttack, did you participate in Florida 70.3 last year? If so, what are your thoughts on the event? I have read all of the race reports - just curious to communicate with those that I hope to see on the course.

Yes, I finished the race this past May. IMO I felt the race was well done and organized. The lake is clean with minimal current and waves, buoys every 50 yards or so and plenty of support. I found myself enjoying the water conditions so much I lost focus and just wanted to leisurely swim and enjoy it. The bike course was very well marked with police directing traffic at all major intersections, which were minimal. The course has its hills, but again plenty of support. If there is anything they can improve on, it's the run. I wasn't crazy about it, it's a 3 loop course that is run mostly on dirt/dry grass trails. I still haven't gotten all the dust out of my shoes from that, but it didn't deter me from doing it again. As with the other stages, there was plenty of support on the run course. The best advice I can give you is be prepared for a HOT day.

I may end up doing this race, and will be travelling from out of town.  That being said I am going to have to break down my bike because I am flying and tribiketransport.com does not come to my area to pick up my bike.  Are there any good places to take my bike to that can put my build and break down my bike before and after the race?

Don't know if anyone is keeping up with the Florida 70.3 site, but, they posted a few quality links to the Bike and Run courses with Elevation Mapping as well as a great Transition Area map to give you an Idea of traffic flow an placement.

I'm in.  I'm flying in from San Diego and I'm already starting to get my plans together.  It still seems a little early but I'd rather not wait until the last minute.  I'm staying at the Wyndham at Bonnet Creek.

This is going to be my first HIM and I'm doing it as part of the CAF Operation Rebound to help raise money for wounded warriors.  I hope to see you guys out there.  Maybe we can all me up and go for a quick swim, bike, run or even dinner.

I went through www.challengedathletes.org and Race-For-A-Reason.  I don't remember what I did with the link to sign up, but once I find it I will send you a PM.  The one that they have up right now is the one for 2007.  The 2008 Race-For-A-Reason still does not have a direct sight.  Let me check my emails and I'll be sure to get back in touch with you.

Hi,
I signed up for the HIM in Florida as well. This would be my first. If anyone will be training in Atlanta, GA, then send me a message.
I have done 1 sprint. I will be doing the Int'l distance in Miami on March 16, 2008 as a prep tri before the HIM.

I start the 20 week program from BT on December 31. Talk about a new years resolution...
Regards,
Mario

another 1st time HIMer here...

How hilly is the bike course? My weakest split will be my run. Very strong on the bike, can usually keep it over 25mph for a sprint, avg 22.5 on a hilly OLY last aug. I have been working on my swim for the last 3 months, have come a long way. Trying to get a feel for how hard I will be able to go on the bike. My run pace doesnt change wether Im tired or not, Im just SLOW and steady. On the bike HR usually btw 175-185. On the run, 130-140. Im clearly not pushing hard enough, but running is much harder to me, natural cyclist.

Did the philly half marathon last sunday. Really didnt pust it, wanted to run the whole thing, no walking. (wanted to see what 13.1 feels like) I did it in 2:40 (yes, Im SLOW) 12:10 mile pace. I have got thru 2 years of tri's without run training, just toughed it out. I ran 12's in 3 of the races I did. Only one race I tried to push it on the run, and ran 10:50 pace. I have been off the bike since oct, just working on LSD runs, and swimming. Im happy with my progress so far.

I will be staying at port orleans at Disney, driving down (I dont like to fly)

Bryan

get a cabin or a room at the lodge.  I've been told that's the best bet to prevent morning race day frustrations.... from what I hear it's craziness trying to get around....

I got a cabin

I've heard a lot of people saying to stay in the village to prevent race day frustration, and I'm getting a little worried because I am staying in the Park but not in the village.  My dad hooked me up with a timeshare for that week, so I'm staying for free, but I am considering getting a cabin for the night before the race just so I am there and I won't have to worry about logistical issues.  Are there any thoughts to this, or is it worth the money to stay in the village?

As long as you are there in time to scout out the place you should have no trouble getting to and from the event site.  Just remember that most people are going to be uptight the day before and on race day.  Just start out to the race site early and you'll be fine.  The people who did everything last minute had the problems.  It really is quite easy down there.
