Pre-race routine:

Couldnt sleep all that well, nerves. Got up at 3, couldnt go back to sleep up for good at 4. Had breakfast of whole wheat english muffin, almond butter and bananna, big glass of water and cup of coffee, then off to race.
Event warmup:

Put on wetsuit, not much of warmup
Swim
  • 33m 5s
  • 1760 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Thought swim went really well. Only swallowed one huge face of water other than that was pretty pleased considering first time ever swimming this far at one time. Ended up being a couple minutes faster than I thought I would be.
What would you do differently?:

No much
Transition 1
  • 03m 20s
Comments:

Could not get the wetsuit off my arms, probalby added one minute.
What would you do differently?:

Practice getting out of wetsuit quickly.
Bike
  • 1h 08m 29s
  • 22.3 miles
  • 19.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Again, was pretty happy with bike, probably could have pushed the middle lap a little harder. Did the first lap in about 22minutes and figured if I kept up that pace would be dead for the run so i slowed down a bit and did second lap in about 25 minutes then tried to pick it up again for 3rd lap probably could have shaved a couple minutes off ride but not too much.
What would you do differently?:

More training, push a little harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Happy with this.
Run
  • 57m 10s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Here is where i think i could have done a little better. When I got off the bike I was feeling pretty good and looked at my watch and figured I could run 10 minute miles roughly to achieve my unofficial goal of 2:45. Well after the first 200 yrds we go down this big hill and all I thought about after that was dont kill yourself so that you die coming up that hill at the end then end up walking around the track to the finish line. Was pretty tired for the first half of run but then picked up pace for second half. But that hill at the end, coming back into the sunlight on a pretty hot day was tough and i more or less tried to keep a decent pace to the finish line but was pretty spent.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder, train a little more.
Post race
Warm down:

Had some water and a bananna. Tried to eat some pizza and just not much of an appetite. Saw my son, wife, parents, and a few friends who came out for finish which was nice.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

First event at this length.

Event comments:

Pretty happy with result given first Oly distance.

Congratulations, sounds like you accomplished your goal, and even if you felt you could improve your time in the run, you did better than what you had planned, hill or no hill. Again, Congrats!

Great job!!! Faster than your goal and faster than what you were aiming for in the run. Way to stick it out when the hills got tough. Especially great time given it was your first!! See you next year!
