For those of you with less hair than you'd like, does anyone wear anything under the bike helmet to protect against sunburn? I thought I'd look for a Coolmax beanie, but I'm afraid it will just make me hotter to have something else on my head.

I just picked up the Desoto cooling beanie but haven't had a chance to wear it yet.  Slather on the suncreen unless you want funky tan stripes on your head.

The Headsweats bandana thingy works pretty good under a helmet, helps to keep the sweat out of your eyes too. Really, though, I've never had a sunburn on my head while cycling.

I've often worried about getting helmet stripes on my head, but it's never happened, not even during  a century ride.  Sunscreen if you want.

sunscreen as a just in case is what I'll usually do.. I have one of those bandanna's that has a little pocket for a cooling pack..and another type that you pre-soak and it stays cool for a while . I've only used them on my motorcyle though since that helmet is a bit hotter. It does work great when I've used it.

I am definitely losing my hair, but decided to go bald on my own terms. After shaving it clean, I learned (the hard way) that I needed to either wear sunscreen or a Headsweat beanie of some sort. There are many lightweight options that will keep you just as cool as going without.

I have worn a beanie underneath my helmet. It did prevent the sunburn. I didn't feel any hotter than I normally do.

I shave my head and have never thought about this until now.  I never noticed any tan lines at all in the past.

We bought the construction crew on my job site a case of the cool max shorty beanies for this summer to wear under their hard hats. I also wore one while outside on the dock and they definitely do a good job. I didn't feel like it created more heat... felt like it helped more than anything.

Ditto. Nothing that I've noticed. 25 and bald on my own terms (:

I have a full head of hair, but shave my head regularly. I just apply a good sunscreen and have never had a problem, other than sunscreen-flavored sweat pouring down my face.

I wear a cool max headsweat thing under my helmet and it keeps the sweat out of my eyes and keeps me cooler than going without...works great.

I have very short hair and have gotten sunburn on my head...really surprised me...it isn't pleasant.

I guess it may depend on your helmet. I have an inexpensive Bell and I have not had any trouble with burning. If I had the Ironman Kona for example, I think I would have to have a beanie or bandana.

Been wearing an "old school" biking hat??, backwards, under my helmet from day one (20+ year ago), but mostly to cover the back of my neck (probably too short a bill to do much good). Keeps the sweat out of my eyes a bit, but itches on occasion, and up to now, hadn't heard of the "beanie". Looks like I should move into the modern era...

I have gotten a sun-burn/ strange tanning pattern while riding.  It was during RAGBRAI 2003.  I even had lines where the strap of my helmet ran under my chin.  However, I think there are two things that would have prevented this:

  1. Actually WEARING sunscreen on my head and face.
  2. Riding less than 10 hours a day for seven days straight in the Iowa sun.

Therefore, I think my results are skewed but I would urge you to wear sunscreen.
