Total Time = 2h 25m 17s
Overall Rank = 311/321
Age Group = M 35-39
Age Group Rank = 37/37
Pre-race routine:

Eat Pb&J. Wake up boys by jumping on their beds. More gently wake up wife because I want to make it to the race. Drive long way to race and get set up in transition. Pack up enough stuff to camp for 3 days even though we will be there 6 hrs.
Event warmup:

Stood around nervously talking with others and tri 101 class.
Swim
  • 13m 45s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a new experience being my first tri. Heart rate was high before the water but I wasn't really nervous about the swim just excited. I did OK, but not great. Just not used to the group dynamic in the water. I haven't been that intimate with that many people at once before. Did some breast stroke about 1/3 of the way.
What would you do differently?:

New training routine: have wife or kids float in pool on floatie, whack me with 3 ft summer sausage every time i get into a rhythm. More practice, better aerobic base.
Transition 1
  • 05m 49s
Comments:

not bad for the first time but the uphill from the beach to the transition was long. Need to be in better shape. stuff was arranged well.
What would you do differently?:

not too much
Bike
  • 1h 15m 35s
  • 18 miles
  • 14.29 mile/hr
Comments:

This is my best event, that is if it can be said that I have a best event. I did ok here. I was passed by a lot of the ladies on the way out but c'est la vie. Scenery was pretty good. ;)
What would you do differently?:

Train harder to be strong enough to pull up the the hills and stay strong throughout. drink more
Transition 2
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

not too bad here. things were arranged well and I didn't have any trouble finding stuff
What would you do differently?:

eat a bit and drink more
Run
  • 47m 15s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 14m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I was gassed. Ran the downhills and walked the uphills. gotta get in better shape.
What would you do differently?:

Get in better shape.
Post race
Warm down:

couple slices pizza and hang out with friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1) Nasty week at work. I put in aoub 60 hours from Monday to Thursday. Friday off but it wasn't enough.

2) need to do more running workouts and work on my aerobic base.

Event comments:

Only thing that irritated me for how the race was run was that there were no finisher medals. I know it's a little thing, but for my first tri it would have been nice just to have that trinket to show around.

Congrats on becoming a Triathlete! Stick with it and it gets even better. Most Sprints will not give out finisher medals. I guess you could look at your race number as your finisher medal. Take it to a trophy shop and I bet they can mount it on a plaque. I recently did this with the 5th place medal I got. It was only $20 to mount the medal and also get a metal plate detailing the event.

Thanks for the idea, I was already thinking along those lines, but wasn't sure where to start. I attended a half marathon that one of my friends did and every one got a medal, so my expectations were probably unrealistic.

Thanks for the advice.
