Subject: Muskoka 70.3 Bike Course-How Hilly???
I was interested in doing the new Muskoka 70.3 next September. I've read race reports from previous races in the area that it's quite hilly, but noticed the bike course for the 70.3 is different from other events held in the Huntsville are. After having a respectable Oly on a course that was hilly to my standards I'm leaning towards Muskoka but concerned.

How hilly is the ride around Lake of Bays on the 70.3 course? I'm concerned that maybe its to much for me to tackle in my first year of HIM's. I'm hoping to do Muncie in July, and another in September, trying to figure out if I need to stay in the flatlands or take on the tougher sounding Muskoka 70.3.

TIA
Steve

I will be in Huntsville September 27-28-29 to drive the whole course and ride the paved parts of it after.

I know what to expect with the hills from travelling by car on these roads but I want to find out what it will be like from a bike perspective.

I'm just curious, I've done the Peterborough half ironman and the ParrySound Half Ironman.  Both cost $90.00.  Why is this half over $200.00

All the 70.3 races seem to cost twice as much as regular HIM's. Paying a premium since it's ran by Ironman corporation.

It'll probably be full by the time I have the extra funds to pay the fee.

I'm just curious - what makes one race better than the other?  Can you not say "I've done HIM" if it's not an Ironman trademark?  Or is it just that they specialize in events of that size so they are better run etc?

It has long slow hills and alot of up and downs near the end. There are not very many "flat spots". You are going up or down. I road the course in May for fun. Im an average AG and was able to ride it in 3 hrs. It is a nice course and I would recomend this one even as a first HIM. The paving is done for the year on 117, they are repaving about 6 km per year and the were finished 2 weeks ago when I was up there. I will be riding it again a few times in the next 2 weeks as I`m on vacation as it is a good prep for IMKY for me.

HIM is like buying name brand $300 jeans..

Do some other races, you will see..

Come to Vegas and do a real race, with few climbs on the bike...  Silverman...

I did Steelhead and Muskoka last year. At Steelhead I did the bike comfortably in 2:48 and then at Muskoka I did an embarassing 3:40 on the bike. Muskoka is an extremely difficult course for a flat-lander who does not train on hills a lot. I think that that Craig Alexander called Muskoka the toughest 70.3 in the world last year when he won. The other problem with Muskoka is that mid-September in northern Ontario is probably going to be cold and wet. Since you are in MI I would suggest Steelhead for your first year of 70.3s. Muskoka is a wonderful race with great atmosphere and community support, and a beautiful area, but a big challenge.

My SO went up this weekend and ended up driving the course because of the crazy rain that was falling on Saturday - he reasoned that he raced in it last year and as a training ride he didn't have to again- but anyway he said that a part of the course is under construction. So if you're heading up it might be worth driving to see where the construction is ... i am sure it will be done before the race but looks like it's still underway.
