Subject: RE: Muskoka 70.3 Bike Course-How Hilly??? rottieguy - 2007-09-17 9:22 AM I was interested in doing the new Muskoka 70.3 next September. I've read race reports from previous races in the area that it's quite hilly, but noticed the bike course for the 70.3 is different from other events held in the Huntsville are. After having a respectable Oly on a course that was hilly to my standards I'm leaning towards Muskoka but concerned. How hilly is the ride around Lake of Bays on the 70.3 course? I'm concerned that maybe its to much for me to tackle in my first year of HIM's. I'm hoping to do Muncie in July, and another in September, trying to figure out if I need to stay in the flatlands or take on the tougher sounding Muskoka 70.3. TIA Steve I did Steelhead and Muskoka last year. At Steelhead I did the bike comfortably in 2:48 and then at Muskoka I did an embarassing 3:40 on the bike. Muskoka is an extremely difficult course for a flat-lander who does not train on hills a lot. I think that that Craig Alexander called Muskoka the toughest 70.3 in the world last year when he won. The other problem with Muskoka is that mid-September in northern Ontario is probably going to be cold and wet. Since you are in MI I would suggest Steelhead for your first year of 70.3s. Muskoka is a wonderful race with great atmosphere and community support, and a beautiful area, but a big challenge. |
