But can you wear those biking shorts while playing guitar?

Don't know what to tell you - I can say that if I had recently made 2 trips to the ER, I would be a little shaky too.

Life is too short not to be having fun.  (unless fun has a sister that's cuter...)

Dude, you had a pretty serious shake-up there.  Give yourself time to get over it, and permission to take a few rest days.  You could even burn fossil fuels to go to work for a few days, go wild.  Take care of yourself Scott!

My guess is that your body will demand some kind of run or ride out of you within a few days, and that you'll enjoy the movement, the endorphins...  As for keeping it fun... gosh.  I'm not so familiar with this not-having-fun concept, maybe someone else can chime in there.

Coming off that accident, I can totally understand why you would not be having fun.

Take a step back, relax and don't worry about it for now.

I agree with everyone else.  Maybe you should take some time off and do something else for a while.

Although there's something to be said about pushing through the 'not-fun' times in any training plan.  Can you do the "bare minimum" training wise and see how you feel in a week or so?

I was going through the same thing at the end of the season last year and decided just to say ``f--- it all'' and didn't train for a couple months. I re-evaluated and decided that doing anything for time was out -- I was going to try my best and if I did good then great and if not, who cares. `fast' or `slow' became irrelevant -- I just marveled in the doing, not the time.

Take some time off. You'll get the itch soon enough.

I agree with taking some time off.  I had forced time off and that really made me want to get back to running and everything.  I'm still not quite back into it with regular workouts and training plans, but it's definitely getting better.

I'm kinda new here, but don't really know your situation, so I guess I am speaking mostly for myself, and if that applies to you then I hope it helps, but maybe a restructuring of goals is needed. I don't mean lowering the ones you have, but trying to figure out or remember why you are doing what you are doing to start with. I think alot of people who start triathlon expect a lot of themselves. I know if I go out on a ride and dont hit a mark that I set, I get discouraged, but I often find new marks while on a bike or run and find I go too hard. It adds up. If you keep pushing yourself to always be faster or better than you are, at some point that becomes the reason for doing it, and it becomes a chore to start each workout, because you know you will be disappointed if you dont do at least what you did last time. I find when I get like this I need to go out on the bike and take off the computer, leave the HR monitor at home and just go out on the bike into the mountains and look around while I am riding, or go for a walk with the dog instead of a run today. I know I will have that hard workout waiting for me the next day or the next week, but I shut it out and just enjoy the ride I am on. I almost always find at the end of the ride that I enjoy those rides more than the fastest PR rides.

Yep, x2

I'm found the same thing to be true and I'm doing that now. Just swimming, biking, and running because those things are fun to do!

Trying to get exactly 1 hour 50 minutes of biking in while doing 5x5min intervals at HR = 173 with 5 min active rest at HR = 140 and an average speed of 16.5 mph while taking in a GU pack every 30 minutes on the dot along with 4 oz of water every 15 mintues, then change into my running shoes in less than 60 seconds to go out for a 30 min brick also keeping the HR at 173 = NOT SO MUCH FUN!

Scott...simple...start carrying a small metal rod to races...find your competition and "Harding them"...you'll be winning in no time...

Seriously, chill out for a bit...and smell the roses...life's too short...hope you're feeling better soon!!

By following an actual training plan and not just logging mile after mile of continuous running I've sped up quite a bit - and enjoyed the process.  Are you following a plan?  If you are maybe you should re-evaluate it.  If you are not maybe you should.  Effort without purpose is not as effective.

I just have high standards, and I beat myself up when I don't reach them.

I think the answer is similar to my solution to ending the obesity epidemic in this country.  If we change the definition of obesity to having a BMI > 40, BAM - we end the epidemic.

Similarly, if you learn to lower your standards, you'll have more fun.  My wife learned to lower her standards when she married me - anyone can do it...

I have been following a training plan. I have gotten better. I just haven't gotten as 'better' as I would like.

I just have high standards, and I beat myself up when I don't reach them.

Then you're not on a training plan that matches your goals.  Doing one plan while sitting around wishing you were achieving the goals that a different plan would get you to is living in fantasyland - and being depressed about it!  That's crazy.  That's like going on a great vacation to Disney World and being bummed out that there's no surfing there.  Either get realistic about your goals or get on a plan that will push you to reach them.  I'm on a plan that's pushing me as hard as I can go for my upcoming marathon.  It's not quite going to get me to BQ speed - sure that would be great - but I'm not going to lose sleep over it because I didn't think it was realistic to BQ in my first marathon.  For some it is, not for me.

In the original post you said you're not having fun at this anymore and that you are not good at it.  Now you say that the reason for your displeasure is that you are not getting better fast enough.  The more you talk about it the more accurate Bear's post seems.

FWIW, a change in your motivation after the accident would be completely understandable and if THAT is what this is really about then what I'm saying above doesn't apply.  Time will take care of that.

Sounds loke a LITTLE mental vacation is in order. In most aspects of my life I focus so intensly on whatever I'm doing that I don't realize I'm mentally spent when I am. Then along comes some little thing and I melt down.

So let me offer the guitar player in you a little mental vacation... Just cut and paste and you're on your way.

I'm 3 hours south of you on the map and always happy to talk guitars.

Maybe a break from BT while you're at it.

I wrecked on Sunday and can't do sh*t. I am missing training more than ever already and can't wait to get back on the bike! And run! And dress myself.

Hey Spokes, quit f'in whining OK. You think this is all about fun and games? You think this is some silly azz schoolyard playground shxx? Get your head leveraged from your nether regions my lad. Quit hanging out with the wrong crowd out there in Granola country. Come on over to our side and jump on the winning team. Inside every lazy azz, overweight, poogie bait chewing, couch monster is a triathlete trying to get out. The way I see it you've got a choice. You can continue to lie around the house in your all cotton oneceys eating bonbons or you can get your lame azz out on the road and man up. Cut some eye hole out of a pillow case and go for a run through South Central LA. That'll perk your happy azz up if nothing will. Probably help you get faster.

Just quit f'in whining. Here's a novel freakin idea. Go meet some ladies. Get lucky. Get rid of the tension. Or better yet move back to southern f'in Alabama or Mississippi or where ever it was you were before you decided to "Go west young man".

Now get your azz motivated or I will see to it that The Secret Society of BT Maintainers of Manhood comes out there and takes a giant crap on you.

Enough said.

spokes - 2007-09-18 8:46 AM  I had simply hoped to get *some* speed benefits and I'll have to change my training after the marathon to work on that. I'm frustrated with my body's limitations...

b.s.  You've got 2+ months until your marathon.  The bulk of my training for the Chicago Mary on Oct 7 has come in the last 6 weeks.  You've got time to do tempo, track and hill work, along with long runs, pace runs and recovery runs to increase your speed.  Either you're on the wrong plan or you aren't training right if you don't think, with the base you already have, that you can't get any faster between Sept 18 and Dec 2.  It's there for you and you could do it if you want to and you do it right.

It's there for you and you could do it if you want to and you do it right.

Key sentence, especially the part I underlined.

Of course, it's easier and more gratifying to some to seek attention by whining about how your expectations are too high and your progress is too slow, rather than to patiently and consistently train toward a goal.
