Subject: Pregnancy and Sprint Triathlon
Hi all! Well I have the best news of my life....I am pregnant! I just found out yesterday and am super excited...it's my first! I am in the very early stages (about 3 - 4 weeks).

I have a sprint triathlon coming up this weekend...and have been actually training pretty hard for it up to this point (bricks 3 x week including some sprinting)....this was all before I knew I was pregnant.

I am a very competitive person and would like to race this weekend, but not if it's going to put my new friend at risk.

My thoughts are that the race will probably take me about an hour give or take (and depending on how I feel lol). This will be the last race of my season.

Any suggestions?

I never did a TRI while pregnant, but I would I would think it is ok this early BUT ask a doctor (you never want to risk something happening to baby or yourself while pregnant) - if Doc says yes then stay hydrated and eat something often to keep blood sugar level so you don't start "heaving" mid race...  and enjoy your last race of the season because life is going to be a bumpy ride after baby comes.

Congratulations

1st off: ASK YOUR DOC!

2nd: i would think it would be OK.people run through out their pregaancy and your balance isn't off to where riding a bike could be dangorous. Be VERY careful and don't get over heated and drink plenty of water. Most people don't even know their pregnant at this stage.

3rd off: Congratulations!

Of course, get doctor's opinion. I have had friends race while pregnant. If they feel more tired than normal, or queasy or anything out of the ordinary, they slow down. It sounds like you have a good base and this race shouldn't be more of a strain than normal. My doc told me that I could do anything normal and accustomed during my pregnancy, including playing volleyball and running (wasn't tri'ing at the time) but that was six years ago. Congratulations!

I don't have any answers - just to ask your doc.  Mostly, I'm here because I wanted to say Congratulations!!!

Thank you everyone for your congrats! I'm on cloud nine

I am leaning towards going with the race. I will listen to my body. And I realize that at this early stage most women dont even know theyre pregnant

I would never take someone's advice here and make my decision based solely on it...obviously ask my doctor. lol...but im not asking my doctor, Im asking y'all! And I appreciate the honest and informative responses!

And I plan to stay active during my pregnancy....for as long as I can! I'm an aerobics instructor and PT and am looking forward to trying to set a good example as a healthy mom!

again I'll go with everyone elses suggestiosn to consult your Dr on whether to do the race or not.

but if you do go ahead with the race, be careful about any nutrition you take,  I noticed recently on gel packets they say do not take while pregnant.  not sure if that is the same with electrolyte drinks too but I'd advise checking the labels.

 and lastly congratulations!!

I'm no expert, but I don't think you got pregnant while doing a sprint tri. I realize that some guys do strange things in the water during the swim, but still...

I have heard that there are some concerns with swimming in open water while pregnant. All kinds of bacteria and other ickys that aren't particularly dangerous to fully grown people, but can be problematic to a developing fetus. I don't know if it's dependent on how far along in the water you are though.

Again, congrats and good luck!

Congratulations on your news!

There will be folks who will tell you to do nothing while you are pregnant (PG).

If you have trained adequately for your event and listen to your body, you should be fine to race. I was told that I could do anything PG that I did before becoming PG - running, etc. You just don't want to embark on new/harder training. My doc did say no sit-ups after 1st trimester and no jumping jacks and you need to pay extra close attention to your body temp (no overheating) and hydration.

I ran and did aerobics until month 6 with my first child (stopped because I kept spotting) and until month 8 with my other one.

Good luck in your race.

First of all CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I would talk to your dr just to be on the safe side.  Imo, I think you are probably fine.  Your baby is still tiny tiny tiny and it would be extremely difficult to do anything to hurt it.  You are in good shape too, so you wouldn't be doing anything new or more strenous then you've done in the past.  But I would take it easy--no need to totally push yourself.  its up to you really and what you feel comfortable with.  And as long as you have your dr ok, you can safely excercise throughout your pregnancy.   I highly recommend it--its soooo good for you and for your baby!

As for open water, you don't need to worry about that.  Your baby is safe inside an amneotic sac and will be protected from any bacteria that enters your body.

Congratulations and ask you Dr but I have heard about women running marathons while prego so I don't know why this would matter but I think you should probably take it easy.  Chances are the last 3 or 4 weeks you have been busting your tail getting ready for the race so if that has not caused any problems what are the chances that the race will??
