Hey BT'ers,

I know this group is an awesome resource, so I want to try and see what your thoughts on an idea I am kicking around. Over this last Winter, I was training pretty well, but ran into a few lulls, as I did this Summer. One of the things I feel this is from is my lack of training groups and the support they provide. I know this can be a problem in any state, but more so in places like the frigid Northern climes, so I wanted to see if people wanted to try and put together some virtual and hopefully some real training groups. These would hopefully keep up string and motived through the Winter.

Thoughts?

Devin

Hey Devin,

I know we tried to get this started last winter.  I was just starting a new job, so flexibility wasn't there, but I think I have more flexibility this year.  This should be a typical winter workout week for me:

Monday: Indoor brick (spin/track), Minnesota Valley Y (MV YMCA, Burnsville), 6:10am.
Tuesday: Swim, Edinborough (Edina), 7:10am.
Wednesday: Indoor run (track), MV YMCA, 6:45am.
Thursday: Swim, Edinborough, 7:30am.
Friday: Indoor run (track), MV YMCA, 6:20am.
Saturday: Long run with running group, Kinsington Park (south of Marion Lake), Lakeville, 6:30am.
Sunday: Off day.

I can easily be convinced to workout elsewhere.  My other options are: Edina Y, Minnetonka Y, or Minneapolis Ys.  If you guys are willing to do outside runs, I can also get together in the Edina or Golden Valley area before work.  Let me know what your schedules look like and we can throw some stuff together...

I'm definitely interested in weekend long runs.  Devin - I couldn't have done those without you this summer!  I have another half-marathon on Jan 27th, so I will be putting in the miles this December and January.

I, however, am not interested in 6:30 AM runs in the winter like Sal is doing.  It's just too cold.  I prefer late morning, early afternoon.

If anything was planned along those lines, I'm definitely interested.  I go to Lifetime, primarily downtown Minneapolis and Minnetonka.  If anyone belongs to those clubs let me know and perhaps we can meet up!

I was going to send some pity your way, but then read your blog and saw that your half is in FLORIDA!!! (jealous)...makes all that winter training worth it...

Yeah.  The funny thing I didn't consider is that I would be training in the cold and so the 70 degrees or so will feel really warm when I get there.  I guess I will have to run on the treadmill in the hot gym once a week or so.  Not on the long run though!  No way.

mndiver - 2007-09-20 9:34 AM I may be interested in some winter group running on the weekends.

Bryan, the group I meet with runs usually about 6:30 or 7 Saturday morning.  Most are training for a half marathon, a few for marathons.  Pace is usually anywhere from 9 min/mi to 10/10:30 min/mi.  Group starts out together, then usually breaks up according to target pace.  Usual distance is anywhere from 7 miles up to 14 miles depending on the time of the season.  Here's where we meet:

Let me call the group tonight and find out the details for Saturday.  I haven't run with them myself all summer.  Was too busy training for and racing tris on Saturday!   I'm going to try and run with them the rest of the year until tri season starts again in the spring.

Thanks, it was fun running with you and Brian. I find in my old age, it is hard to stay motivated. The biggest reason for trying this to hopefully stay strong enough this Winter to be ready for a more advanced training plan some Spring. I am looking at the 20 week 7-10 hr Winter plan starting Nov 1, as soon as I recover from my next big adventure!

I agree that during the winter, I am a lunch time runner, as I do not enjoy the temps at 6AM.

I actually would love to do group workouts. I do the vast, vast majority of my training alone and would love some company sometimes! My problem is that I live in Hastings. With the exception of a couple BT-ers in Red Wing, I'm not very near anyone, I don't think. So weekdays would be really tough, but I could certainly still make some of the weekend gatherings!

I work right in downtown St. Paul (near Rice Park and the Landmark center), so lunch runs are a possibility if anyone also works or lives there.

I've got a group that swims in the mornings at the Lifetime Fitness in Plymouth on MWF, generally starting at 5:30 AM. We generally do about 3K yards in the workout, anyone is welcome to join us. Check my logs for the pace/intervals on the workouts.

I know I gave Bryan an invite, but everyone else is invited to come run...

6:30 am, Kensington Park Lakeville...I plan on doing about 10.5, but depends on the day I guess.

It's an out and back...heading east out towards Cedar...we run along Hwy 50, with turnaround points at SA on Cedar for 8 miles, Flagstaff for 10 miles, Pilot Knob for 12 miles...

Group runs of varying distances (6, 8, 10, 13) and paces also occur in the NORTH metro out of Tri Fitness in white bear lake at 7:15 on Saturdays.
