Subject: How do you keep track of laps while swimming?
Before I started doing triathlons the only swimming I did was for fun only. I haven't swam laps since high school. How do you keep track of how many laps you do? I just swim for time. Usually I'll do a half hour 2 or 3 times a week. What is more efficient...number of laps or time?

I start my ironman watch when I start swimming, and know that I swim 2:20-2:30/100m (yes, I know, slowly!).  Every 100m, I hit the split, and the current lap is the current 100m I'm working on.  Works pretty well for me.  Even if I miscount laps (mistaken button press), the total time tells me where I am lap-wise.

I used to count every lap. I knew odd was on one end , and even on the other. Now I have taken to hitting the lap button every 100m. Its much better, and I get to track my 100m splits.

Back when I first started and was just swimming continually, I bought an electronic lap counter that I could wear on my finger.

These days, I always go in with a plan (sets, intervals, drills), so it's easier to keep track of.

I don't understand what you mean by "efficient" with regards to laps or time. Swimming is swimming.

But to guess at an answer - it really doesn't make a difference at the very beginning, you just have to swim.

However, most plans I have found/use, indicate yards of swimming, not time. The only exception I have seen is the free plans on BT that just say swim for a certain amount of time rather than distances.

I think the reason a lot of plan go by distance, is because a swim workout is very often broken into drills, intervals, WU, CD, etc. There is more down time, at least more than a bike or run workout. So you could be short changing yourself by just going by time.

In the long run, you will find that distance and time are pretty compatible anyway. To estimate my swim time for a workout, I just plan that I will be swimming 2:00/100. So if my plan calls for 2500 yards, I set aside 50 mintues to complete the workout. If I'm doing a lot of short quick sets, with longer rests, it takes 5 to 10 minutes longer. If I do a long continious swim, it could be 5 to 10 shorter.

Hope I helped.

Oh yeah, to answer your first question. There are plenty of interesting ideas I have heard here on BT. Mostly, I just remember. But I remember in terms of hundreds, not laps. The other idea I liked and use. Bring 5 coins into the pool area and leave them on the edge. After each 100, move one over to the left (or right). Obviously, when you move all 5, you have done 500 yards. Then move them back. It's easy to remember which group of 500 you are on.

Intervals -

You should be able to break down a 30 minute workout into 4 lines:

4x75 w/ 20sec rest
12x50 in sets of 3: #1 easy, #2 build your speed, #3 fast/easy by 25
300 kick
16x25 drill

When you do that set, it's really hard to lost track of how far you've gone.

im too lazy to search and find this same topic from awhile back (apparently everyone else is too )

my method:
estimate approximately what your 100m time is. set your interval on your timex im watch to be whatever is close.

start swimming and press start!

- no coin flipping
- no button pushing
- no counting (trig, algebra, mantra, etc)

you simply listen for the BEEP! if you dont hear it, you probably will on the next 100.

the beauty is that at worst you should only be 50 to 100 off assuming you have your pace reasonably dialed. you can zone out and concentrate on your swimming, not your counting.

when you stop, look at your watch and look at the number. if you know you were a bit slow, subtract one lap. if you were fast, add 1. easy-peasy!

Just push the things that are on the lane lines.  For example today I had several sets by 100 so each 100 was a little yellow bouy on the line and they were in groups by the assigned set when I was done so I could keep track of total yardage.  My coach says to count by the 50's on long swims

Wow everyone does this very differently.

I have a workout..do my workout...easy to count.

Say I warm up and then do 6x400. I just swim 400 and then hit lap button. If I'm confused where I am I look at the lap split and know if I'm at 250 or 350 as I know my pace and can easily do the math. After my 400, I rest, at end of rest I hit lap button again.

I bought a new Ironman watch as my old one only did 30 laps now I swim longer and I'm up to 50 lap version.

I don't have  a lap counting watch which most people seem to have but I do the following

- often I am doing a set plan, written out, so it is easy - but even within that I sometimes use the floaty things on the lane lines to move along so I remember how many I have done in a set.

However, if I am just doing the distance, like it sounds like you do,  to prevent me forgetting and to amuse myself I often use the alphabet by 25s or 50s.  So I start with a (obviously) and whilst I am swimming up and down I try and think of things beginning with that letter - usually within a theme - like animals, or boys names or describing someone...OK I may have a weird imagination but I get bored easily in the pool, not to mention forgetful.

Search the forum for this thread in the past.  There's a neat little finger counter that you push at the end of each lap that counts for you.

I don't have anything that helps me count.  I do it using 2 things.  First, I count going up and back.  That way going down is always odd and coming back is always even. If I am coming back and I'm still saying an odd number over and over in my head, I know I forgot to roll to the next number. Also, rolling to the next number more often makes me remember what number I'm on more easily.

Second, I keep track in 2 ways.  So, for example, I'm on lap 7.  I know that I'm on 7 and I know I'm 3 away from 10.  So if I completely forget that I'm on lap 7, I can usually remember that I was getting close to 10 and I'd know I was going out, so it would be odd.  That makes it either 7 or 9 and if it were 9 I would know it, so it must be 7.

Demented,  I know.  But, it works for me.

I put coins on the ledge and flip one each 2 or 5 laps that keeps the number of laps I need to track to 2 or 5 at a time.

I find it easy. 1 lap, 2 lap, water up the nose, I go home.

Go to ebay and buy a Nike Triax 35 watch. Or triax 10 or triax whatever . . . just not one of the expensive Triax 300 model. I have 3 of these things, you can find them for less than $50 most of the time. they have a counter function. Put it in that mode and when you touch the starting wall, click the up button which is perfectly in a place to do so when you push off and glide. Click every time you hit the start wall and each number is 50 yards (for a 25 yard indoor pool). 40 makes 2000 yards, I know that like my name.

I would never pool swim without it. I generally do not care about time of laps outside of sprints (and then I use the big wall scoring clock). I just care about total yardage.
