Do most races have weigh ins or is it a honor system. Reason I ask is that in two of the tris I did, there was no weigh in and some of the people in the clydes division looked a little lite.

It usually depends on the race.  I had to weigh-in for St Anthony's this year and my HIM last year b/c it was the Clyde Long-Course Nat'l Championships.

As for the guys who look really "lite", I have talked with some of them and a couple will admit that they rely on their taper period to "bulk up" to the 200# limit.  That, or just wear heavy shoes and drink a lot of water but don't go to the bathroom.

I weighed in once out of six races this year. The other 5 were all put on by 3D Racing in Michigan. They do things a bit differently, Clyde is over 225, no weigh in and one award for first place. I happened to get my kicked for first by the same guy in two races once by 11 seconds, the other by about a minute, but he never sticks around for the award. I am convinced he weighs 170 and is just f-ing w/ me.

I've never had to weigh in reacing tris as an Athena.  I have at a few larger running races.  Although once upon checking in I got grilled on whether I weighed 150, I wasn't so happy (mostly because I weigh 175) and when it came time for awards ( I placed 2nd in Athena) they ran out by the time they reached the Athena (who were last) -- nice.

Im an Athena 5'10 and 165 but its mostly because im tall and top heavy so i can see why some people would be skeptical about others. Just remember to look at how tall they are and that might explain their weight.

I can be borderline, so I would be pretty pissed if the weigh in came after the race! It should be like wrestling, if you are going to get weighed, do it at the start.

one RD here in town always has a scale at packet pick up,, you don't get the packet until you get wieghed..  some others will also weigh in and they also do it at packet pickup.. I've yet to have one after the race.. I'm sure it's happened somewhere though, but I'd be willing to bet that it happened post race, only if someone lost out to someone that just doesn't look like a clyde..

The Chicago Tri is the only one that I've actually weighed in at.  It can be frustrating when race directors don't follow thru with this rule.

But, it is just harware.  The health and social benefits far outweigh any plastic trophy.

I've never had to weigh in when I raced Athena, but I usually do smaller races.  It seems like the larger ones are more likely to have weigh ins.

The worst was at st. ants last year.  Guy in front of me wearing jeans, a big jacket and work boots in Florida in April.  Weighs in and is at 200 ON THE DOT.  He jumps off and goes "Clydesdale... Hello hardware"

I made sure to ask where his boots where when I passed him on the run.

Ahhh yes..gotta love the people that wear four layers of clothes for the weigh in at St. Anthony's. That happened to me two years ago...I looked at the girl and told her to go have a hot fudge sundae before the race tomorrow...so at least it could be a little fair!!!!

I was weighed twice this year...St. Anthony's and Ironman Florida 70.3. Oh..and its pretty obvious Im an athena at 5'0" and 170!

I think they RD should Weigh-in in race clothing that way you can't wear layers.  That is just ridiculous that you would layer just to make the weight.  These are probably the same people that think every kid in the league should get a medal.

Hartford Marathon Foundation has you weigh-in wearing "normal running attire" to try to prevent the layering/heavy shoes issue.

I would venture to guess that it's the opposite. I'd bet they're the parents of 16yo pitchers playing little league.

Man, sand bagging the clyde/athena class is even worse then sandbagging an expirience split race (like beginner, sport, expert type race) That would really me off.

Although looking at the times form this year, of the race I want to do next year, I'm better off in my age group as the slowest clyde was faster then half my age group.
