Community First Fox Cities Marathon

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 59m 52s
Overall Rank = 696/1728
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 59/97
Pre-race routine:

None, other than the normal pre-race nervous pacing...plus one Accel Gel about 1 hour before, then one at start.
Event warmup:

None, figured I'd warm up in the first mile or so.
Run
  • 1h 59m 52s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Went into the event intending it to be a long/slow training run. Held to this plan for the first mile, then settled into a steady 9 min/mile pace and went with it. Haven't done a LT test for run yet, so not sure which zone I ran in today, but I suspect well above the zone 1/2 range I had intended. Can't find a quick reference to RPE, but I ran comfortably until middle of mile 12, then had to work to hold pace to the end.

Started at 213.8, finished at 208.4, so about 2.5% of BW lost. Had third Accel Gel at 4 miles (first two prior to start), fourth (and last) at 10 miles, also one piece of banana at 10 miles. Carried and finished two small water flasks on hydration belt, plus drank a small amount of water at each water station.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, although my intentions were to run differently (LSD) vs. race. Having done it, I'm glad I chose the later.
Post race
Warm down:

Thermal blanket, slow walk around finish line, and then about 1/2 mile walk back to car. One diet soda 20 minutes after finishing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My physical make-up...no seriously, I am a long way from my HS CC days (20+ years and 40+ lbs). For now, 9 minute miles are not bad, particularly for 13.1 miles.

Joint and muscle soreness was nearly immediate upon finishing. Ball of left foot particularly. Shoes probably need replacing.

Event comments:

Have only run Lakefront (MKE) and Fox Cities. From what I remember of LF, it was well organized and like this one, had plenty of on-course support. Hard to chose one over the other, but FC in nearer the front of my mind, so opinions are stronger. A well-run event in total.

Dude! Your time is awesome regardless if you haven't done it in 20 years. Heck, furthest I've ever run is 6 miles and lots slower than 9 /mile. I cheered on some runners and saw lots of walkers. A gal at the gym today said some of her friends she ran with went out way too fast and paid for it later in the race. Good run, good time, and now just rest those feet and achey bones for the next race

Gymgirlx and Sarah: Thanks for the kind words. This is what makes this site and community so powerful...the encouragement from other triathletes.

 Resting comfortably today...
