Hi A newbie here, Are wetsuits allowed at the Emerald Pointe Tri coming up?? I can swim but I feel A LOT better with my suit! Also really nervous about the swim start, being kicked in the face, someone swimming over me, you know things that can make you drown!! How much time between the waves??

Really looking forward to my first tri, just a little pre race panic!!

Thanks in advance for any input.

B

Hey B...wetsuits were apparently allowed last year and likely will be allowed this year too.  The water temp in Lake Lanier is in the upper 70's right now.

Congrats on your first tri!!  Have fun and don't panic...the swim will be over before you know it...

The water temp last year was 75 degrees - air temp was around 60 as I recall, so the water really felt like bath water. Right now the lake is 81 with cooler air temperatures forecasted for the next week and hours of daylight shrinking. I'd say it'll probably be under 78 degrees.

The waves last year I think were supposed to be 2 minutes apart, but it seems like they were closer to 4 or 5 minutes apart. You'll be able to stand up in the water if you stay closer to shore.

As for the swim start, it's a common fear. Seed yourself accordingly - if you're a slower swimmer don't let the pain train line up behind you... get behind them.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info and encouragement! I think I am ready and these posts have really been helpful in calming my fears about the swim. I will stay back in the pack and swim like hell!!

I swam up at Mary Alice Park on Sunday to get an idea of the water temp. It felt cool when I got in, but after swimming for 30 seconds I was fine. Good luck on your first tri. I'll see ya out there. I'm on maroon and yellow Specialized bike. Say "Hi" if ya see me -Charlie

One suggestion I once read for preventing getting kicked in the face if you are in a crowd is to swim like you're doing catchup drills. Bring your first arm all/almost all the way forward before beginning to move your second arm. This way if you do get kicked, it is a little more likely to be your hand instead of your face
