Swim
Comments: This course was really difficult because of the chop and current, which I've never seen in a race before. The women in my part of the wave all decided to do breaststroke. In all honesty, that was the best plan. Sidestroke was also effective but more tiring on the legs. I flailed my way through the first two legs to finally do freestyle on the way back to the beach. My sighting was bad because I got way off course and the canoe guys had to tell me to come back towards the buoys. I thought I did horribly, but was not that bad comparatively. What would you do differently?: Maintain focus on the swim and keep a better stroke rather than flailing about. Transition 1
Comments: Molasses. No other way to say it. It was cold and I had to put on a shirt. What would you do differently?: No shirt. Bike
Comments: The course was billed as mostly flat with rolling hills. It was actually just hills. I cat-mouse'd with a guy who kicked my ass. He was 64 years old. What a stud! The woman in my age group that I chased at the end turned out to be a guy. Still, a good rabbit. What would you do differently?: Hill work, hill work, hill work. Gearing was hard and the whole bike was a struggle. Transition 2
Comments: This was my first race with clipless pedals. I tried to dismount and ride one pedal in - bad idea. I couldn't get my leg over the bar. I need Elena's flying dismount clinic. I'm usually less than 1 min in T2, so I don't know what happened. What would you do differently?: Better dismount. Run
Comments: My feet finally warmed up during the run because they were blocks of ice on the bike. The other racers were very positive during the run and we all shouted encouragement to each other - so awesome. I tried to kick it up at the end to chase down the red-haired girl who won the 25-29 AG. The course was really challenging but I had a good run. I don't think it was as fast as the results show, but it was a good run anyway. What would you do differently?: Drink less on the bike (I was sloshing) and start off faster on the run. Post race
Warm down: Remove chip, find spouse, cheer for finishers while changing clothes (the finish line was adjacent to transition). It was great to watch folks finish. So much fun. What limited your ability to perform faster: Poor bike skills. Slow T2. Bad mental attitude during tough swim. Event comments: This race was really challenging for me. I'd do it again, just to prove that I can do better. The volunteers could have been better trained but all were very nice. I need to take some turns in the volunteer role.
