Total Time = 6h 26m 4s
Overall Rank = 264/316
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 44/49
Pre-race routine:

got up at 4am and had 2 cups of coffee and nature valley oats & honney bar. got to the race site about 5:45 picked up packet and saw some old friends. wasn't nervous at all. very strange.
Event warmup:

pb&j uncrustable. short walk to the starting area
Swim
  • 45m 55s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

for the first 1/3 of the race i was feeling great! i passed within 2 feet of each bouy all the way to the first turn. that's where the navigation went awry! i went off course about 100 yards. not too much, but enough to hurt. it became apparent toward the end of the swim, i had not fueled enough.
What would you do differently?:

better pre-race nutrition and training.
Transition 1
  • 03m 36s
Comments:

o.k. i suppose. i was frustrated that the swim was so slow and that kind of set the pace. mental, mental, mental!
Bike
  • 3h 13m 12s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.39 mile/hr
Comments:

once we got to Saluda and made the turn back toward Greenwood, a headwind became apparent...very apparent! my bike is not really fast anyway and this just compounded the situation. i was obviously undertrained for this race. Ashley Gaines passed me about mile 30 and gave me some encouragement and fussed that i hadn't eaten. i choked down another uncrustable. Nicole Ramsbey caught me about mile 48 and really re-energized me for several miles. i needed these people at this point in a really bad way!
What would you do differently?:

the most important thing to do differently is find more training time! yeah, right. it was still fun!
Transition 2
  • 02m 44s
Comments:

my rear-end was so tired and my "male anatomy" was hurting so bad, i decided to dig out a pair of running shorts and running shirt from my bag. i was planning on wearing this stuff home but couldn't take the constriction of the tri shorts any longer! i can't believe it, but i stripped down and put on running gear! i hope nobody saw me!
What would you do differently?:

:-) make sure there are no cameras around! :-P
Run
  • 2h 20m 40s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

well, not exactly what i was looking for. i'm not sure what "bonking" feels like, but that may well be what happened to me. i raced under the assumption that i could perform up to par with my base fitness level that i've carried since the Greenville Race (8/19). THAT DOESN'T work.
Post race
Warm down:

AS ALWAYS...AT THE END OF THE DAY, I HAD A LOT OF FUN!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

training, nutrition

Event comments:

This race is AWESOME! I love participating, even on a bad day!

Sounds like a great advertisment for the SC Half to me! LOL Man, hearing your strugles, I'm glad I didn't attempt to survive the race this year. I would have just been crossing the line at lunchtime today (Monday). But you look like you did great, despite the problems you describe. Good job on the race!

Oh, and a naked triathlete is a happy triathlete! :-)

Glad you had fun at such a tough race. That swim seemed long! You should get some kind of special award for the most "interesting" T2. See you at Hickory Knob if you're racing. I'm doing it as a relay! Congrats again on a good race!

Good job working through the issues during the race. Man, changing shorts in transition, that's killer old-school triathlon stuff! It's awesome that did what you had to do to keep going. Sounds like you're taking a lot away from this one. That was an awesome race ... I love the Greenwoood venue. That run course can be pretty brutal though. The climbs going out can knock the energy right out of you. Hopefully I'll see you around some of these Carolina races.
