Okay so basically they did two things this coming year.

1.) made the time trials shorter so that Lance can't get as much of a lead

2.) made the course much tougher to give him a greater challenge

Is that correct???

They made the time trials shorter, made the mountains a little tougher on his team (not necessarily on him) so that he can't get as much support from them, but the killer (IMO) is making him ride past where his teammate crashed and died in 1995.  I feel that's pretty tacky.

Personally, I thought that article a load of rubbish. Another tacky journo jumping on the france hates lance wagon. The tour changes every year, as it should, and the route is driven as much by what towns can afford to host a stage of the tour as anything. To suggest that the mountains are easier is daft. I'm sure no rider will be saying the race is easier as they climb up the Cols du Galibier and Madelaine again.
As for the climb up Col portet D'aspet where Casartelli died. The tour has travelled that route a few times since 1995 in fact I think they did this year. (open to being proved wrong here) A couple of times the race has stopped at a monument to Fabio Casartelli for a minutes silence. Most touching.
So basically an ill-inofmed hack wastes some time at work
My opinion anyway

I'd like to see the team ride in the Giro d'Italia.  American Andy Hampsten became an Italian legend after his ride through a blinding snowstorm at the top of the Gavia Pass.  Maybe it's time for Lance to make his appearance in the land of crunchy pasta.

Yes, they do.

Especially our tourist money, and apparently, John Kerry (not that I can blame them about their reaction to W, but maybe they shouldn't have sold arms to Iraq).

I, too, would like to see Lance race some additional races like the Giro.  Maybe he should take 2005 and just tour/race in the US, since so many people here would love to see him race.

Yes, they do.

I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said "Invade Iraq first, then France." Yeah... mature.... I'm not so sure it's about France not liking us.

I don't think that the Tour de France organizers are making changes to the route because they hate Lance.  Lance is well liked in France as a matter of fact.  They make these changes in order to make it (the Tour) more challenging and to give different regions and localities the opportunity to host stages of the race.  In this way, Lance may get a bit of a challenge.

The way the article read, it sounded like the directors wanted to even the playing field so someone else would have a shot at winning.  I don't think Lance has made a solid commitment to do next year's TdF yet.  Since there hasn't been anything else printed/posted since that SI blurb, it's possible some hack was just making sure he got his $.05/word that day...

It'll be interesting to see what happens when he does do #7, whenever that is.

LOL. This is so not on topic. USA sold arms to Iraq, Iran and Afganistan. USA trained and financed Osama Bin Laden, USA put Saddam in power and USA donated money to Taliban for years, under leadership of both Bushes. Yet you people always jump on French for doing similar stuff. Both USA and France have been meddling where they shouldn't have, and still are.
Pot, kettle and all that jazz, please.

As for the TDF route, they are not gaining any fans (except in USA) because of Lance's wins. USA is not really a market for them anyways, so I'm sure they would like to have someone else win it next year.
Lance should retire from biking and go back to triathlons, as an age-grouper (just kidding about the age grouper part)...

These seem like such innocent times, back when Lance was still a cycling god.
