Pre-race routine:

Should have known something was wrong when I got into the car and my temperature gage just said ICE and no temperature at all. It was so cold! I was really nervous and just couldn't get my head wrapped around this race. I was out of it. I don't know why.
Event warmup:

Jogged a little
Run
  • 40m
  • 3.2 miles
  • 12m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Well I started off this race on pace. My goal was to finish it in 39 minutes or 36. My first mile was 12 min and some change. I felt really good at the turn around, didn't feel tired at all. Got to mile two and things started to fall apart. I mean it was like I just mentally lost it. My legs were strong and so were my lungs but my head was just not in it. I started to shuffle and then I knew I had lost it. Then I just stopped. I wasn't tired I was just mentally exhausted. I think I just psyched myself right out of this race. Instead of fun I concentrated on times and it just didn't work for me. I only walked a couple of times and really ran the entire course mostly but my last mile took about 16 minutes. It was so embarrassing and I was so disappointed in myself. I wanted to cry. But I was six minutes faster than my first 5k this year in March so that was some consolation.
What would you do differently?:

Not give up mentally.

NICE!  Wish I'd have thought of that!  I had a Powerade and some chocolate chip cookies.

Great job O!  You ROCK!  Now we just need to get you doing 10Ks for those Olys next season!

Way to go Ovetta!!! 6 minutes off your spring 5k time is EXCELLENT!!

Don't get too frustrated - it sounds like you put a lot of pressure on yourself to achieve a certain goal, and the conditions didn't allow it. Everyone has not-so-great running days - you should just focus on how much time you've cut since the spring.

Keep up the good work with your running! If you stick with it over the winter and gain more confidence in your times, you'll minimize the mental aspect at your next race
