Hiya,

I'm in another Oly - uhh I didn't 'PR' in Stonebridge, that was my first Oly - and I finished, yay for me.

Doing the Oly for this one. Just hoping to improve my time overall before heading into the winter season.  Then I have personal goals to set and work to attain for next year.

That's the beauty of the first one -- it's automatically a PR!  (Personal Record)

Okay then I'll add it to my list of PR's - didn't think of it that way.

Thanks

I just got a phone call from your official ref for tomorrow and here's the scoop:

The swim will be wetsuit legal.  Not for pros, just for age groupers.

The bike will be a cluster-f and only one bike ref for the whole day.  Be careful of potholes.  There's a point where the course comes down to one lane and it's not good quality.  So really be careful and don't forget your spares.

For such a big race, I'm suddenly not very impressed.

I was riding the bus with Pat (who is a contractor for Luke's Locker) he helped set up the course. He wasn't real impressed with the choice of routes or the course. He's offering recommendations to them for next year.

I drove it earlier and it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. There is one span of about 3-4 miles that will require some serious attention. Manholes, potholes, and a big steel plate.

"yup i'm otta here"   I'm not sure how the event was if your were racing but from inside T2  we were seeing a lot of people attempting to ride their bikes into the area well past the dismount line as well as other weird stuff with helmets

Still waiting for official results.....I was in the sprint and I think I finished  in 2:26 and change...not super, but considering  it was the longest race I've done, I'm feeling pretty good. The condition of the bike course wasn't as bad as I thought, and I have to say that while overall, I wasn't so impressed with the way the race was run, especially since it was so expensive, I was impressed the traffic control. Those were some busy roads, but I always felt safe, and never felt crowded.

 What did everyone else think?

I thought the number of volunteers on the bike course was AMAZING.  It was good traffic control, for the most part,  but two times, police officers put vehicles in my way much too close.  I had to brake coming into a busy intersection even.  The police officer commented to another that she couldn't get the cars to stop.  Come on now!  I also witnessed a horid, horid bike crash where a car hit a girl and threw her several feet. It didn't look good.  Does anyone know who she was or how she evaluated medically?  I know ambulances came for her.

I thought the event was run well considering all of the challenges they faced.  I also thought they had one of the best post-race events.

I didn't realize there had been a crash. I hope whoever it was is OK.

On a different note, did anyone doing the sprint feel like the  swim course was longer than stated? I felt really good during my swim, but had a much slower time than normal.

There were at least 10 motorcycle refs.  I rode to T2 on the bus with them and they all had motorcycle helmets. Brian (Pilgrim on BT) was one of the refs.

that sounds much better, I was thinking the ref I saw leaving was most likely "assigned" to the pro/elite field to keep them honest.. But I'm telling ya... I counted 4 people coming into T2 with their helmets on backwards, so it was like that for the entire bike.. I stopped another 4-5 that started running out of t2 with their helmets on.. and they were quite aways from their bikes giving them a decent jog back to their bikes.

**OOOhhh yea,, I saw these guys come in on a tandom bike,, I wasnt' expecting that either

I thought this event was fantastic.  It's comparable to 70.3 and IM events put on by North America Sports and others.  Here's my thoughts.

The logistics for the point to point went very smooth.  Arrived at the Reunion Arena at ~4:15, set up T2 then hopped on a bus to T1.  Set up T1 and then chatted with several people I knew.

The TT start for the swim went off well, although they got delayed a bit with the pre race formalities.  They introduced all of the pro athletes.  The swim was well patroled with kyacks and boats.  They could have used a few more bouys on the return.  We had the opportunity to swim the entire swim course on Saturday (I did).  I've only seen that at IM races.

The road conditions for the bike course weren't as bad as posted here.  I drove the course on Friday and thought is was OK.  There's a few miles with some man hole covers, cracks, holes etc. but nothing that any urban cyclist wouldn't run across in training.  The traffic control was great.  I've never seen so many volunteers, police and traffic cones.  The view of Dallas as you came over the viaduct was awesome.

The run course was fine.  Aid station every mile with plenty of volunteers.

Post race was great.  The venue at Reunion Arena is nice.  I sat in the grass on a hill with dgillen and watched the pro awards.  Saw Greg Bennet get his checks for $420,000!  North America Sports and WTC better watch out.  Lifetime Fitness just raised the bar for pro pay out opportunity!  Why race IM when you can make this kind of money racing shorter events.  They had the Emerald City Band playing.  They are a well know local cover band and are hard to book.  Usually have to book them a year ahead.  Great entertainment for the spectators waiting on the bikes to get to T2.

Overall I thought it was a great event and I will do it again next year.

Those pictures are great!

I was able to watch the pros in T1.  Those guys are fast.  Seconds in transition.  The men came out all bunched together.  Sarah Haskins came into T1 about 1 minute ahead of everyone.  That was exciting.

As I was watching the men swim out I saw them all started drifting off course.  It's like they were all following the same guy.  Then suddenly they start turning back onto the course.  So even the pros can screw up navigation.

I thought the race was very well put on too. The roads were not as bad as I expected after reading about them on here. I also agree that there was traffic control everywhere! There were a couple of times when I felt the cops should have stopped traffic a little sooner than they did. One time was on a fast downhill and to give the cop credit, he would have had the traffic stopped just in time if a car had not decided to go anyway. As it was, I had to brake going very fast and just barely avoided getting hit. I would have preferred to see the cop stop the traffic a little sooner as it was a bit scary going down that hill seeing and coming upon the cars crossing the intersection. The bussing went very well I thought. Mu husband also rode them as a spectator and had no problems. The aid stations on the run were full of volunteers and well stocked. The only other thing that would have been nice were a few more buoys on the swim. I swam the course Saturday and still got a little off course on the swim in today because I couldn't see the buoys. All in all I was pretty happy, and I had a good race. It was my first Olympic distance so anything I did would have been a PR, but I beat my goal by 12 minutes so I was pretty happy.

The race results all say 850M for the Sprint swim. Is that an error, or did they sneak in extra 50M on the course??? Maybe THAT's why my time sucked. Yeah...that's it. Felt like about 1200. Rough swim.
