Snow Hill, Maryland
United States
Maryland Coastal Bays Program
Total Time = 1h 43m 7s
Overall Rank = 246/358
Age Group = 10-19
Age Group Rank = 7/9
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at around 6:00 and got to the tri at about 7:45. I met up with my cousins and talked to them a little. Plenty of stretching.
Event warmup:

Stretched a lot.
Swim
  • 12m 25s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

I didn't know what to expect when I started the swim but I quickly found a rythm. A bunch of students from the Naval Academy were at the event because it is only 30 minutes away from the campus and they were great swimmers. I felt fine in the water. During training I swam 40 minutes non stop so I was overly prepared for this portion.
What would you do differently?:

Not get too worried about people passing me - swim at my own pace.
Transition 1
  • 04m 9s
Comments:

HORRIBLE. I spent about three minutes trying to get my biking jersey on because I was soaked and couldn't get dry enough. I guess everyone struggles on their first ever transtion though. It really broke my focus though.
What would you do differently?:

Lay out my area better so I don't fumble with crap too long.
Bike
  • 56m 26s
  • 15.2 miles
  • 16.16 mile/hr
Comments:

I spent the least amount of time on the bike during training and it showed. I got passed plenty but wanted to race my own race and not get caught up in everything. I kept my composure and followed one girl for about nine miles before passing her. She was a great pacer. The course was extremely flat. It got tedious during the end of the race, but as we got closer to the end more and more people flooded the roads and cheered you. At the end my mom was there cheering me on and getting video.
What would you do differently?:

Train more in this area.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

All I needed to do was take my helmet off and rack the bike. I didn't want to spend too much down time because my thighs killed and I knew that they would feel better once I got going.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 28m 58s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran with a friend of mine for the first two miles before upping the tempo the final mile. With about a half mile left I started to sprint. My final half mile split was around 3:00 so I was happy about that. I really wanted to break my time of 1:45:00 and was elated to see my time at 1:43:07 when I crossed the finish line. Everyone was cheering because I passed about 15 people during my sprint.
Post race
Warm down:

Threw up twice (typical after a run), and ate the sandwhiches and bananas they gave out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of knowledge - it was my first triathlon!

Event comments:

Amazing weather!!!
Everyone there was so laid back and the race director eased any nerves I had by cracking jokes before the race started. I don't know my official position or times (the ones I posted were from my watch), but I do know the top six or seven finishers were all from the Naval Academy. The winner beat me by 45 minutes nearly!

Definitely worth all the training. I wish the season wasn't ending because I loved every second of this triathlon and will certainly do it again.
