Total Time = 5h 25m 13s
Overall Rank = 68/900
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 13/90
Pre-race routine:

normal bagel with peanut butter. water with nuun for pre race hydration. 1/2 power bar about 1 hour before start. Transition set up quickly, spoke with a few people but mainly hung out by myself, I had some butterflies for some reason.
Event warmup:

small swim just before start and jog to get the race off my mind
Swim
  • 34m 50s
  • 1931 meters
  • 01m 48s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was a good swim. Non wetsuit swim so my plan was to take it easy and not push the swim. Found a group of 4 guys and we were all swimming about same pace and just hooked onto the group. Happy with my time. I could have passed them and maybe knocked off about 1 minute but then i would have used more energy.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

nothing, i swam without a jersey and i knew it would take a few extra seconds to get on the shirt since i was wet, no issues here
Bike
  • 2h 41m 10s
  • 56.6 miles
  • 21.07 mile/hr
Comments:

Plan was to get comfortable and when i hit 290 start hitting it harder. I took the larger hills in easier gears and all the rollers i hit hard and recovered on topside of each and on down hills. I never felt like i pushed outside my limits on the bike. Near the end i saw that i could have broke into the 2:30's, but this would have made me hit the hills (last two) really hard, decided to hold back and save for the run.
On a side note, half way through the course some of the lead 30-34' agers passed me briefly. What pissed me off was for about 10 miles they were drafting off each other and taking turns leading, eventually one of them just lost their legs and i passed him told him in passing that he had a really nice breeze for sometime. I never saw this person again. I was hoping they would get a penaly (for my buddy todde (jwithyco) since they were in his ag. I got passed by 4 people in my ag, then i inturn repassed 2 of them near the end.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe hit the hills harder, happy with bike
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

had some issues getting my socks on
Run
  • 2h 04m 48s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

I came into this hoping for a 1:40 to 1:50. The heat ruined that for me, not really i just could never muster anything past 8:15 for the first 5 miles, hit the really big hill on the back side. I walked the majority of this and after that it was a run/walk race for me. One day i will get the run i know i can do. In my opinion this run is harder than BSLT, there are more hills that you have to deal with constantly vs buffalo springs you get quite a bit flat section.
What would you do differently?:

more hill work and run in later day heat more
Post race
Warm down:

took about 5 minutes to get my witts about me again, then post race massage and food, drinks and a beer.
Best of all this was a 14 minute improvement from Buffalo Springs and a 8 minute PR at this distance.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My training has been great this year, the one area it has not. nutrition, i have struggled all year and i am a constant 166-169. i should be around 150.

Event comments:

Great race and support, tough course but i definately liked the challenge. I will do this one again next year, it will be a 70.3 race, sponsered.

Nice job, I saw a pace line out there that pissed me off too.   I didn't realize you were nervous before the race, you seemed so calm and ready to kick .  Great effort on a hard day.  Now, we can take some time off before ramping for a flat Arizona!

great racing out there yesterday. your swim was strong, your bike was strong, and unfortunately mother nature was strong on the run. you continue to improve every race which is always encouraging and that is what leaves you hungry for the next race. rest up and take your IMAZ training full tilt. hit those key workouts and take the light days light. and as for the AGers in my group drafting, the guy who got 2nd in my AG had a penalty. hmmm, i wonder what for? as for drafting that i saw, it only seemed to happen on 1704 due to it being a fast section and it being hard to pass with traffic. other than that the hills seemed to spread people out. again, great job yesterday and continue to fine tune that nutrition.

Great work out there!  I saw some suspicious drafting out there, as well.  It sucks, for sure.  But it's great knowing that you raced your own race and did so well without any help.  Very well done!

Very nice race. Strong run, considering the hills and heat. Very solid bike split. Kinda wishing I'd done this race now.

Awesome time and a great effort.

I know what you mean; it's "so easy" to walk through the aid stations, but then getting going again is hard. Mental discipline at those distances is something I'll be working on too.

Solid splits all the way around on a tough day.

Only a hundred some-odd days 'till IMAZ.

Great race out there Jamie!!! Way to go on the run I totally agree the conditions out there were pretty harsh and they definetly took their toll. It was nice to run with ya for a little while though... Solid race all around, now enjoy some time off and then it's time to start getting yourself ready to rock IMAZ!!!

Way to set a PR!  I'm pretty sure everyone ran a lot slower than they were hoping for in those conditions.   I did a 1:49 at Timberman 2 months ago and a 1:37 in a half-mary about 3 weeks ago, and I ran 2:05 yesterday.   You gotta take what the course and conditions give you, I guess!

Way to go on setting the PR!  That run course was pretty brutal!  That is definitely a time worth being proud over.

Congrats!
