Ok, on Friday night we found ourselves camped next to someone we came to refer to as "Bongo Charlie" and his whole musical family.    As I lay awake listening to "horse with no name" sing alongs, I thought back to other races - did I ever think I had a good night's sleep before hand?   Too nervous to sleep, too worried about oversleeping.....

Have you ever had "enough" good sleep before a race?  How did you do it?

For a Saturday race I sleep REALLY good and long on Thursday night. Friday night is restless and long.

I am a NERVOUS WRECK the week leading up to race week, but have gotten quite good at getting myself to go to sleep. I've only traveled to one race, though, and I did not sleep well the night before. From my hotel room, I could hear the traffic on the street below me, and the guy in the next room snorning. I had to turn on the loud air conditioner to drown out those noises. Once I got used to that loud hum, I fell asleep. But then, I was awoken by my cell phone a few times by some brilliant friends and family members (including my own father) who thought it would be nice to send me good-luck text messages in the middle of the night. Those all woke me up. (I had my cell phone on, because I used it as a back-up alarm clock.) That said, I barely slept but was okay come race morning.

Sorry for the banjo-playin, horse-with-no-name singing neighbors. I hate that song...that would have killed me. If you sleep well days 4, 3, and 2, before the race, a bad night's sleep the night before usually won't affect you much.

I've done tri's on as little of 3 hours of sleep, I usually get between 4.5 and 6.5 the night before.  What really matters is what you get the two nights before.  If you rest well on those days, the night before isn't that big of a deal so you can be a nervous wreck or listen to Bongo Charlie if that happens!

I've done mucho business traveling in the past so I can sleep anywhere anytime.  The night before has ranged from business as usual zzz, to having a far-out dream about not making the race on time and having a panick attack trying to get to the starting line,  I did that one this past Saturday night!!!

No. Too far to drive. Too nervous. Doesn't bother me. I have insomniac qualities anyway.

I never get good sleep the night before, even if I'm at home.  I try to get really good sleep for the two nights leading up to the race and that seems to help.
