For those of you who also live in a place where it snows - do you cross country ski for fitness? i haven't done it since i was 6 or 7, but i have heard it can be a really good aerobic workout. (i've been downhill skiing for 12 + years). does anyone do it keep the lungs in shape?

Oh yeah, it's one of my favorite workouts when we do get snow. It really works the butt! I can't wait for the snow. Last year was decent. I get on the skis on my front porch and take off into the woods for as long as I can. My dog loves it too when I go faster than the usual walking speed.

I've gone snowshoeing in the past and I've done downhill. Would like to get back into downhill this winter, but I'm also seriously considering trying cross-country. Compared to downhill, entry-level cross-country equipment is fairly inexpensive. Worth trying for a change of pace.

It's a kick azz workout and a great way to cross train. I did a lot of XC skiing in college. Not so much now. I like snowshoeing which can be another great way to cross train. You can make it as leisurely or as hard as you want.

I've got 6 pairs of racing skis in my basement that are waiting patiently for snow.

If you like x-country skiing, you might enjoy reading this...

Canadian Ski Marathon - From the Back of the Pack

Was a blog entry written by David Glover, a Northern Virginia elite triathlete.  By elite, I mean this guy wins Ironmans.  He won the Vineman IM this year and does sub-9 IMs.  He decided to do this ski marathon and thought that since he was an elite triathlete, he would do fine.  He was wrong.  Good read.

I haven't been able to pull out my cross country skiis much, seeing that we haven't had much snow the past couple years. It is an awesome workout!

Cross country is my number one sport.  If I could do nothing else, it would be skiing.  It is a fantastic workout and if your terrain is of the rolling hill type it can be serious fun.

... and for those that read the Canadian Ski Marathon bit, that is in my backyard. We have great skiing here (if only the winter would last a bit longer things would be ideal)
