I am doing my first duathlon this weekend, and am interested in hearing how most people approach the different transitions. It is 5k 30k 5k. Should I run in my cycling bibs? Usual swim bike run shorts? Do it all in running shorts?

In the two duathlons that I have done, I have seen a mixture of tri-suits, tri-shorts, and bike shorts. Don't recall seeing anyone do the whole thing in running shorts. Personally I have used bike shorts but those had a relatively thin pad so they did not negatively impact my running. Tri-shorts seem to be the logical choice if you already own them.

Tri shorts/top. Cycling bibs/shorts feel like a loaded diaper on the run, run shorts offer no padding on the bike.

Tri shorts and either a tri top or a short-sleeved lycra top (Under Armor or the Wal-Mart knock-off at 1/4 the price), depending on the temperature.

Ha, I read your thread title as "Cloning strategy for Duathlons." I thought it was brilliant. Perhaps you should look into that as well.

I don't know, I think it's kind of silly to wear tri shorts or a trisuit (which I've seen at duathlons) when you could wear true bike shorts and save your butt from hurting that much more on the bike. I have some good bike shorts that don't have a huge thick chamois that were fine in duathlons. It was certainly way better than the pathetic fleece thing they call a chamois in tri-shorts. I view them as a necessary evil for events that involve swimming. But if you have a butt of steel and want to wear them, go for it.

As for those people I've seen wearing trisuits in duathlons - now, I just think they're trying to show off.

back in the day I use to wear a padded underwear under my running shorts and a running singlet, now I use a trisuit with a gel pad cover for my bike seat.

hmmm i have done du's....always in tri shorts and tri top....the bike short padding is worse than a maxi pad....and a 30k bike is short under 90mins, if ppl can do 180km in tri shorts surely 30 isnt impossible?  i think du's are a riot and dont get nearly the respect they deserve, i have always found its a lot harder to do a du over a tri.......no matter what you wear, have fun...and remember it could be worse....you could have to get wet!!!

Ditto to the tri tops!
....no fun running in maxipad shorts (bike shorts).....kinda does weird things to your running gait (sp?)

I wore tri shorts and a sleeveless cycling jersey....but my bike seat is pretty good. With a proper seat, you shouldn't need too much padding (unless you are doing some serious mileage)

Ha, ha, I would love to get wet. Heck I wish swims were longer and runs shorter, but I just wanted to get something in this season, and coming in this late, a DU is the only option around here.
30k is a quick enough bike that I'm not worried about padding at all.

Another question is socks. Do you just leave them on the whole race? I like to bike without which usually works out fine coming out of the water, but not so much coming off the run. I was thinking socks on R1 off for bike and R2.

If you are comfortable running & biking w/o socks then don't bother. Just my .02 cents.

I have worn regular bike shorts and bike top.  I had zero trouble with the shorts and their padding, and practiced running in all my bike shorts of varying comfort and padding.  Last 2 times I didn't like the cycling jersey, though, because on the first run it kept slipping up due to waist elastic.  I've done 3 dus, all of similar length.    I am not the fastest running, but saw no appreciable difference in run time versus when I run in my normal "running shorts".  Have fun!  I love duathlons.

Oh yes, I also do not wear my tri shoes for this type of event.  I wear my comfortable cycling shoes (MTB style).  I'm not a running jumper, and since I can wear the same pair of socks for the whole race, I prefer this.  I can run MUCH faster through transition with the MTB shoes and I put in speed laces.

One final thought.  Due to the missing swim, transitions can be very easy.  You really only need to switch shoes and take the helmet on and off. Otherwise, wear the same for everything.  Do not wear cycling gloves (or, wear them on the run!).

I wore regular bike shorts at my first duathlon (and only) and I HATED running in them!!  They were way to bulky.  I wore a bike jersey (sleevless) which was fine.  If I ever did another one, I'd wear my tri shorts and the sleevless jersey.

I wore bike shorts in both Du I did this year. I agree they are bulky... but I'm new to Tri's and hadn't really considered getting tri shorts until after my du's were done. I will definitely have tri shorts for the next du I do because the run would be much more comfortable with them.

I really loved the du's. I was able to pick up so much time on the run because I'm a strong runner, but sucky on the bike!

I wore bike shorts in a du once and the chamois caused some chafe-age during the run.  Now I wear tri shorts, much easier to run in.

I think it all depends on what you can run in and what your butt is made out of.  Through experimentation I have discovered I can run in thinner pad bike shorts, tri shorts and compression shorts.  I cannot run with a gel or thicker camy.  I can bike with compression shorts and it has not bothered me to much.  It depends on the length of the ride.  I could probably do up to 20 miles wearing compression shorts.

So in answer to your question.  I definitely think you should wear pants.

I don't usually wear socks when cycling.

I would wear a top.  To keep the sun off my back and to avoid all the pointing, staring and general looks of horror.  Me running without a shirt could also be called "Clothing Tragedy for Duathons".

Shoes would be helpful, especially in the run.  I heard about a guy who ran the Chicago Marathon last year barefoot!  Yikes!

Definitely wear a helmet.  Especially in the bike part.  I have seen people wear their helmet through the run.  I think they also had a drool cup hanging under the chin.

Wear whatever and live and learn.  That's how I did it.
