Pre-race routine:

I woke up a little late and choked down a plain bagel and a banana. I only got half the bagel down. Too dry. I got to transition a little later than I wanted to because I failed to properly anticipate road closures. I managed to get all my gear ready but barely had time to visit the port-o-can and get down to the start before the national anthem. I definitely felt rushed and that was not good.
Event warmup:

None - no time for that.
Swim
  • 36m 16s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 25s / 100 meters
Comments:

I liked having a wetsuit. The deep water start did not bother me as I had done that at Marble Falls. I had a severe problem veering off course to the left. It was a clockwise swim out and back, basically. On the way out, I was able to stay realtively close to other swimmers. This probably helped me a bit with my sighting and speed. My turn around the bouy was basically treading water so that really slowed me down. I need to work on that. On the way back, I was following the shore but the course wasn't exactly parallel to the shore so I felt like I was way out to the left side the entire time. I was definitely swimming alone.
What would you do differently?:

Sight better and work on not using breast stroke to do it. Even with the wetsuit, I felt like my legs got real heavy on the sighting.
Transition 1
  • 03m 31s
Comments:

I had a little trouble getting the suit off my left ankle even though I had used body glide. All in all, though, a 3.5 minute T1 with a wetsuit wasn't too upsetting.
Bike
  • 1h 17m 52s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.15 mile/hr
Comments:

Well, I had a flat so that cost me big amounts of time. It happened on the third lap. I was averaging somewhere around 20mph before that happened. I didn't look at my watch, but I think it must have taken at least 4 minutes to stop change and get back going.
What would you do differently?:

not flat.
Transition 2

Run
  • 47m 13s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

I thought the run was good. I felt better the 2nd half which helped me finish strong. I had some minor cramps start to form at the beginning, but I ran through those and never felt them again. It was great to have my family encouraging me on both laps.
What would you do differently?:

I'd probably try to push the pace a bit more. I felt like I had something left when the race was over which only tells me that I could have gone faster.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around, ate and talked.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the flat tire.

Event comments:

Really great event. I loved the course. Challenging but well organized and laid-out.

Wow! You had a flat and still almost averaged 20mph.  Nice job!  Congrats on the race.
