I am. Active duty Air Force and multiple random deployments per year means not being able to register a year in advance for any of the other NASports races. But for Hawaii, I'd beg and plead for leave, and anything is possible.

You know, when I first started doing tri, I was like, no matter what, I want to go to kona. Even through lotto. But now, as I do more tri's, I'd like to make it on my own. I'm not sure what changed my mind. Of course, my mind my change next year, but for now, no lotto.

Unfortunately, this probably will not happen so I'm hoping to outlive some people as I get into the upper age groups of 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Either way, good luck. I heard it's pretty hard to get in. I think you can help your chances by becoming a "passport" member?!?

When I have the time to make the commitment to racing an IM distance race, I will consider a loto spot. I am amoungst the masses that will have to age into and luck into a spot getting to me through my own talents. Since the $35,000+ and growing price tag for a charity spot is, well, just a little out of reach, than a loto spot is my most likely chance. I will not discrace the race with my presence until I can devote myself into a proper effort.

I'm going to register!  I'm AD Air Force too and I KNOW at least I will be stateside when Kona rolls around in 2008 so I can't pass up the chance!

When does it open?  Probably after the race, but anyone know exactly when?

Well Michellie Jones said does not mater if you do kona through kq or lottery you still go to Kona and if you finish you still finished. I am going into the Kona lottery this year and probably every year.

I jsut wish they had something like that for the boston marathon but then again if they did they make billions per year.

I plan on registering. It's a long shot, but better odds than me qualifying at IMFL in three weeks.

Not.   I'm on a non IM-NAS-WTC kick. They can run their prima-donna event without my skinny butt. I'll do other tris, adventure races, marathons, and fun stuff...it's a better value, AND they're great events.

Wouldn't mind, one day, but not worth sinking the cash into a 'might get there' event.

I'm taking a chance on the lottery.  It's not that bad of a deal.  Last year I entered via Passport for $85.  They sent me a DVD of the 2006 Kona race - the coverage with Al Trautwig minus the commercials.  I watch it while on the trainer.  I hope they do the same this year.

Wasn't there a thread before that the lottery is not really a "lottery"?  What I mean is they let a lot of human interest stories in and don' t really draw names out of a hat.  So basically you have to have a good story.  I am sure some people are drawn but I doubt it is many.

I guess there is no way to really know.  If they did as I suggested and said that noone would pay the $ for the lottery.  I doubt they get rich off the lottery but it is still $$.

I'm going to go for the lottery.  I told the hubby if I get in I'm quitting my job and training full-time.  Eat, Sleep, and Train.  The best part about it is that he is cool with it.

I am in...I figure right now it is my best hope of ever getting there. I agree with the guy that said it doesn't matter how you get there, if you finish, you still did the same race. I would only be racing against the clock, but man it would be a memory for a lifetime!

For all of us thinking that at age 60+ we are going to have a better shot at qualifying, why do you think that? I know right now that there are not alot of 60+ folks doing IMs, but the sport is very very young. Don't you think that the same folks doing tris right now at 30-50 might still be around when we reach 60? I think it will be just as hard when I reach 60+ to qualify as it is right now...just my thoughts.

Good luck to everyone going for the lottery.  The lottery is not my favorite thing and I personally will only go if I qualify, but I've got nothing against people going for it when it is available as it leads to some really cool race reports!

I personally think that not everybody is blessed with speed. If they did not have the lottery, they would lose interest, I am sure.  So to those with out the speed or..the time to actually train as hard as it is needed to gain the speed...Thats what the lottery is for.

Good luck to all that enter..

yep in theory even the everyday man can become an ironman world champ even though he can not win no matter what he does. .

Well why not have the lottery its a huge money maker.

I expect you're right.

After reading this thread, I decided that I would probably like to try the race someday if I had the chance and might as well start playing the lottery for it. I don't think my odds are very good in the international pool, and the price for that slim chance is outrageous, but you can't win a lottery without buying a ticket so I'm in. At least for the money I get 6 months of daydreams and motivation.

last year I did not think I could finish Konda this year if I got in so I only did the basic level. nice how they are screwing over people internationally. other than extra entry is there any reason to be in the passport club?
