OldAndInTheWay - 2004-12-03 6:34 AM I hope it's not Bonkers. I haven't done any tri's yet and I signed up for a half in June. I just started biking and swimming in July but I've been a distance runner for years. Well I guess I'll find out come June.

This is probably highly debatable but IMO the run is where you can really make a difference in your tri times. I find that in my agegroup the largest time difference between the first and the last guy in each event almost always is in the run. If you take advantage of it the run seems to let you put more time between yourself and other triathletes than the other two events do. Of course for those of us who are slow runners the opposite is true. Having a background in distance running will be a big plus IMO.

Sounds good to me. I'll use my running background well...assuming I survive the swim .

Thanks for the input DB

Uh Drinking Buddy,

Actually it's the bike where you make up the most time to win. And rest assured smarter genuises than myself came up with a mathematical forumla on this very website that proves it. (Of course me being technology-inept I can't find the thread). It seems that most triathletes on this site are engineers who love data and have analysis start times, finishes times, splits, leg times, etc ad nauseum and found that the swim can give you a good start on the run you can make up time but it's the bike where you win! Which means I'll never win because, all together now, I SUCK ON BIKE!

You can do it. I just finished Taupo 3 days ago. It was my first season, but with pretty good training. I did 2 sprints, 2 sprint duathlons and a half marathon in my build up (over 9 months). I was aiming for a 5hr 20 finish. We had an attrocious day, so that plan went out the window, and my IT band gave up 10km into the run.

The question is would I recommend it. lol. No way, it was a day in hell. But I will be back for more next year.

Only you can answer your question.  You have take some time and find a training plan that will give you the results you want and then determine if you have the time to invest this year to follow that plan.  Being as performance-driven as you seem, it may take more than one season to have the strength and endurance to finish a 1/2 IM as fast as you'd like to, and there's nothing wrong with that.  My goal is much less lofty - I'd like to finish a 1/2 IM in under 6:30 and this is my first year doing tri's.  Heck, before last week I never swam a single lap in my life...but I know I'll put in the training time I need to to get where I want to be.  And even if it takes me longer than 6:30 to finish, I'll still limp home with a smile on my face!  Good luck!

I'm doing it! My plan is 2 sprints,an OLY, and a double century bike ride this summer, and the a 1/2 IM this summer annd a full IM the following summer... I think you can do it if you believe AND put the time in.

To do a sub 5, I think you'd have to be carrying a very good aerobic base before your training started - i.e. you were coming from a competitive sporting background, and preferably were a good runner/cyclist. From the couch like I was, I don't think many people could build up the base in time. It is a BIG distance, and not to be underestimated! Can you sustain a bike ride at 36kmph, and run, say, a 1.45?? Can you stomach food at race pace (big problem I had that didn't show up in training)? Do a sprint in 1.15, and realise you'll have to go at that effort for the whole 1/2 to crack a sub 5.

I think that it is a good idea as I plan on doing one in September 2005 ... but only if I feel that I am up to the challenge.  The swim and bike leg will present no challenge to me but the run leg will; although I used to run extensively in years past I am much slower and heavier these days!
