Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:55, quick shower and drive to race site. Set up transition (not a great spot). Walk Ins/Outs.
Event warmup:

Run 3/4 mil to get loose. 7-8 minute swim warmup prior to wave.
Swim
  • 09m 31s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

Went out pretty hard and was top 8 at 1st bouy. Faded to 13th by shore. Could tell form was breaking down.
What would you do differently?:

Back off a hair going out, leaving a little more for the 2nd half.
Transition 1
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

1st race with shoes already in pedals on bike. I did fine getting away from transition, but had some trouble getting into shoes once up immediate hill.
What would you do differently?:

Get different shoes.

Comments:

As stated, lost some time on 1st lap getting into shoes. Couldn't really go all-out, as there were a ton of newbies. This race is really for them.
What would you do differently?:

Work on getting into shoes and up to speed.
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Good transition. Had to avoid a couple of people with their heads down, not looking.
What would you do differently?:

Run a little faster through transition.
Run
  • 22m 6s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt like my time might be a tad quicker. Oh well.
What would you do differently?:

Train, train, train.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around and a little stretching

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor swim

Event comments:

Good local race. Very newbie-friendly. Not the place to set a PR. Bike course is an obastacle course.

Great job.   Agreed, it's not the place to set bike speed records, but still a fun race.

Just saw in your redondo report, you know Rick Crump?  He's my masters swim coach, and in fact just got back from a BBQ at his house.

Great job.   Agreed, it's not the place to set bike speed records, but still a fun race.

Just saw in your redondo report, you know Rick Crump?  He's my masters swim coach, and in fact just got back from a BBQ at his house.

The bike course has become even more of a congested mess since they changed it from a 2 lap course that extended south into Redondo Beach to a 3 lap course all in Hermosa Beach last year. By the 3rd lap there are just too many people on it. They say it was changed for "safety" reasons, but I think it is less safe now.

Both of you know Rick Crump? Make that 3. I meet him a few years ago when my son was going to the middle school where he teaches. Sunday I was flattered that our local tri legend stopped by to give me some encouragement while I was setting up in the transition area. And to congratulate me on how well my son (now at Redondo Union High) did a couple days before in the Bay League Cross Country meet. (Look out Mira Costa, your time at the top is running short!)

I feel left out...I don't know Rick Crump!

I agree the bike was congested, but it got better with each lap. See, us slow chicks practically had the loop to ourselves by the end! Ha!

Looks like you did a great job, despite the congestion. Way to go!
