Subject: Swim technique evaluator - Raleigh/Fayetteville/Chapel Hill area?
Does anyone know someone who can evaluate swimming technique?
(A good coach for a Master's swim program, etc?)

The Raleigh/Fayetteville/Chapel Hill areas are all fairly close to me.

My shoulder is really bothering me, and I'm thinking that it's due to a faulty stroke technique. I'd like to fix this before I end up with a rotator cuff problem!

Thanks!!!

Dee

I was recently at my USAT coaching clinic in Chapel Hill and met Monette Williams from Triangle Multisport:

Excellent resource for you.

I haven't found anyone to help with swim training but shortly after finishing my first tri (Wilmington) I decided I needed some help.  So.... I bought a book.  But this is not just any book.  This is sort of the zen of swimming and is supposed to be very low impact.  Although I just got the book and just started doing the drills which are supposed to reteach your muscles an easier, faster way to swim, I really like the ideas.   The book is at Barnes and Nobles and is called Total Immersion by Terry Laughlin with John Delves.  If you are waiting to find someone to help you, I would recommend getting and reading the book.  It might get you started to help your shoulder.  Good luck!

Piperdog,

Thanks for the advice about Total Immersion, but I believe that's where my problem began....

I read Total Immersion, and changed my stroke. And I started having shoulder problems.

I'm NOT saying that Total Immersion is a "bad" book. It's quite possible that I was practicing the technique incorrectly.

But when I made changes in my stroke, for me at least, it led to problems. Now, my shoulder is killing me, and I can't figure out how to get back to my old stroke.

So now I'm thinking that I need to just see someone who can evaluate it, and help me correct it. I'm not swimming enough right now to justify having shoulder issues. So I'm sure it's a stroke technique problem....

*sigh*

Thanks for the advice,
Dee

Tinkerbell and Jkholden,

Thanks for those names! I'm going to give my shoulder a few days to recover. Then I'm going to contact these people, and try to set something up with them.

I'm hardly doing any swimming these days. Yet, my shoulder is killing me, so I'm sure it's a technique issue.

Thanks!

Dee

Dee,

Oooh, that's not good!  I'm glad you told me about that because I'll be more careful as I change my own stroke.  I'm still just doing the drills in the book.  Please let me know if you do find someone that helps you.  And by the way, does your shoulder hurt all the time now or just when you swim?  If it's all the time, I would highly recommend getting your shoulder checked by a physician (speaking as a doctor myself).  Of course I'm sure you've thought of that!

Unfortunately, it's been hurting all the time now.

I swam for years, and never had a problem. The TI book seemed to "make sense" though, so I tried to extend my arm, rotate more, etc. But somewhere along the way, I must have over-extended or over-rotated. I don't know exactly what caused the problem, but it really did a job on my shoulder. (Probably the rotator cuff.)

I've taken the week off from swimming. It's still bothering me though. And the pain is pretty much continuous. So yes, I do plan on going to a doctor. But I'd posted this thread because at this point, I'd like for someone to look at my stroke. I wasn't "overly fast" before, but at least I was able to swim without injury.

Thanks!
Dee

You may simply have a muscle imbalance problem. Try doing pushups. This could lead to an immediate self-correction and, worst case, won't hurt.

Thanks! I was thinking that maybe I need to strenghten the opposing muscles, anyway.

Since swimming is a downward pull, I thought that maybe I could use some handweights and do an upward motion. (Arm raise.) I'll try the push-ups, too.

The second place finisher in the Men's Elite for NCTS is a coach.  He is starting a Master's program at the new TAC (Triangle Aquatic Center) that just opened in Cary.

I did email both of the people who were suggested, and they both emailed me back. At the time though, the shoulder was bothering me a lot, so I decided to take a break from the pool for a bit.

I took Renee's advice and started doing pushups. I've also started doing shoulder workouts, in an effort to strengthen the opposing muscles.

Between the rest and the shoulder exercises, it's gotten better, so I'm back in the pool - but not pushing it yet.

I've been trying to pretend that I never read TI. Again, I'm not knocking the book. But I've tried to go back to my "old stroke." It may not have been exceptionally fast, but at least it didn't result in shoulder problems!

Thanks for asking!

Thanks!

I'd heard about the new center in Cary. And I'd been wondering if they were going to have anything like this.

I so wish there was a Master's program where I live, but I don't think that's ever going to happen. It would probably take about 40 min for me to get to the TAC, but this program looks REALLY interesting. (I wish I could move to Cary!) I'm thinking the Monday evening sessions that start in Feb will be worth considering.

The price is definitely affordable, too.

Thanks for posting this! Great info!

kapinto,

Have you gone to these sessions yet? This sounds like a great program.

I'm thinking I can get to the Monday night sessions when they start next February. (Can't make the morning ones though.)

Thanks for posting the link!

I have not gone yet, but I do know Marty Gaal, as he coaches my next door neighbor.  He is a very good swimmer.

I probably won't get into something like that until January at least.
