Total Time = 1h 06m 1s
Overall Rank = 18/145
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 5/17
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5, coffee and some munchies for the road, and a 2 hour drive to the race site. I arrived at 7:30 with plenty of time to get my packet, body mark, chip pickup, set up transition, perform necessary race morning rituals, and mill about smartly.
Event warmup:

Warmup? It was freezing cold, and the dewey grass on bare feet didn't help. I'm glad I opted for the wetsuit, and treaded water for about 10 min before our wave start to warm up.
Swim
  • 11m 33s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Awesome swim! Paced myself to get through the crowd, and then started stretching out and picking up speed. Finished much better than anticipated, and even barqhead was surprised!
What would you do differently?:

Very satisfied with performance vs. training.
Transition 1
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Jeremy Davis, the SCTS series/race director, is a sick man. The ramp from the doc to the path/steps leading to transition was more like a wall than a ramp. Then the really long concrete path incline up to T1; brutal!

Some delay in getting up to speed since I failed to set up my shoes with the rubber bands to orient them for quick take-off
What would you do differently?:

If I commit to shoes-on-pedals, set them up with the rubber bands.
Bike
  • 30m 13s
  • 10 miles
  • 19.86 mile/hr
Comments:

On the flats/false flats I was a rocket, but I haven't gotten back into training for hills yet. Need to do more. My HR jumped way up and took some time to recover and pick up speed after a climb.
What would you do differently?:

Hill repeats in training for an easier time in the race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

Felt like I was moving in slow motion. Perhaps it was the dread of the run coming up. I was ready for the race to be over.
What would you do differently?:

Get the lead out! Try to multi-task
Run
  • 21m 44s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Good and challenging course! Little 11 year old Sawyer Willingham pushed me hard and helped me increase my pace (unwittingly). I'm not sure if, or how much, I had anything left in the tank.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster, I guess.
Post race
Warm down:

Searched for the BBQ, but didn't find any. The only thing available was a few bananas, and a bunch of toddler food (Goldfish, Chex Mix, Oreos, etc). The promised BBQ never showed up by 1PM when I left.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being slow. :-)

Event comments:

Hello, BBQ? Could have used a couple more course direction volunteers, too.

Great job!  It's nice to see someone else thought the hills on the bike and run were tough.

Great job David! It was good to see you again. No BBQ was a bummer. Can't wait till next year ...

Never did see that BBQ. Awesome swim! And you've got all winter to work on strength to make the hills more manageable. Way to battle back from your cycling accident. See ya at the pool.
