Very rarely these days.  My achy areas are the tendons in my knees and my shoulder, and I've been reading up on how ibuprofen inhibits healing in tendons.  So I avoid it as much as possible.

Although I took four after my half on Sunday because my right hip/leg was completely locked up.

Daremo - 2007-10-26 9:39 AM Never again .... I used to take 4 - 5 at a time when I had any issues.  But ibuprofen only masks the pain and does not really relieve it.  so if you have something serious going on it can actually "hide" it from you and you might do something else to make it worse.

Not completely true. Ibuprofen helps relieve inflammation, which then helps your body heal. Obviously, if the pain keeps coming back, then yes, you need to get that checked.

I've never taken it just for sore muscles, but lately I've taken it several times a week, 4 at a time, if my back is acting up.

Never.   Can't take it because I'm on Coumadin anticoagulant.  I'm only allowed to take limited amounts of acetaminophen.

You're both partly right.  Ibuprofen and other NSAID's work both by relieving acute pain and acting as anti-inflammatories, and those can be two distinct processes.

I don't really ever take it. If I can move under my own power I really don't take anything or see a doctor.

Favorite quote from an old-school PA in the Ranger Battalion:

"Give 'em aspirin until their ears start ringing, and then back 'em off a coupla hits...".

I have some siginificant osteoarthritis/degenerative joint disease, but I only take ibuprofen when it is painful to walk. Painful to run, I just don't run for a few days. I also use Celebrex occasionally, but I'm not sure it's 30x better than ibuprofen (even though it's 30x the cost).

I've been reading some about the anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 fatty acids lately as well. Personally, I've been consuming a diet rich in omega-3s for about a year now, and I have to say I have less pain than in the years prior to that specific change in my nutrition. Whether the reduction in pain is due in part to EFAs, I don't know... But there seems to be some indication that could be the case given the developing body of literature about the anti-inflammatory properties of EFA. There are other health benefits attributed to consuming a diet rich in omega-3 FAs that are more important in the big picture... but that's another topic. I do not take fish oil capsules. I get plenty from my diet.

This link has a lot of info about omega-3 FA's in general (from my 2nd favorite website):

Advil only, for headaches 1-2x/mo. I get really bad ones - hard to function normally, but take 2 pills and they seem to almost disapear. Never took it for muscle soreness.

Aaaaaaaaaaah now ya'all have gone and made me nervous with your responses.....I'm having shoulder issues and the doc has me taking 1800 to 2000 mg of ibuprofen per day. Been taking this dosage for six weeks and looks like if I follow doc's instructions, will be taking them for another eight weeks. Aaaaaaaaargggghhhhh!

I took them on two occasions this past season, and that's the only time I've ever used them. I only took them when a doc or my PT said, "You could try some ibuprofen."

Up until about 8 months ago, I took it a few times a week. Then I wound up with an ulcer that they believe was directly related to the use of Advil. Now I don't touch the stuff. Only Tylenol.

Ibuprofen (generic Advil) for unusually muscle or joint pain or occasional cramps, maybe a couple of times a year.  I was crazy sore last week but didn't really need any.

Acetaminophen (generic Tylenol) for headaches or fever, again maybe a couple of times a year.  For persistent fever, I alternate the two until it goes away.

Everything in moderation.  Except chocolate.

I don't take ibuprofen.  It hasn't helped me when I'm in pain... EVER.

I'm a BIG paracetamol fan but I only take that when I'm really sick and in serious pain.  Naprogesic is my hero!  That stuff during a bad bout of menstral cramping is DIVINE.  mainly because it is metabolicly active in stopping protaglandin production!  (a huge inflammatory process

Otherwise I takesupplements.  Magnesium, Zinc, Calcium, and Evening Primrose oil are my favourites for cramps and general muscle aches and inflamation.  They work wonders.  EveningPrimroseOil especially!  Does the same thing naprogesic does but to a lesser extent.

I'd rather give my cells the tools they need to begin repairing themselves rather than mask the pain.

Please! Take it from a person that was on dialysis for three years and has spent the last year recovering from a kidney transplant. Stay away from Ibuprofen. Max amounts of Ibuprofen cause incredible damage to you kidneys. It is well worth it to tough it out, use ice or heat (whichever is appropriate for your malady and situation) and rest the injury. I beg you this. There are far too many people that have found this out the hard way.

Taken a little further, do not take ibuprofen or acetaminophen after you have consumed alcohol. It is extremely dangerous to your kidneys for Ibu and liver for Aceto. Don't mean to be everyone's Dad, but it is a personal hell you do not want to be involved in.

That should stop now.  You're already over the recommended max daily dosage (2400mg).  You can get similar anti-inflammatory effects with a smaller dosage.  You're seriously asking for trouble if you continue.  Take that for what it's worth.

Rynamite - 2007-10-29 3:14 PM

Unfortunately I've been taking a lot of it lately for lower back/hip problems. I'm the 800 mg 4x a day guy.

Hopefully in the next few weeks that will stop, as my chiropractor is getting me back in line.

I used to take it all the time, but ever since I had prolotherapy for my back I never take it. My doctor explained to me all the problems with it, especially for athletes. I didn't understand all the medical background behind his reasoning, but the idea is that inflamation is our body's way of naturally repairing injuries. When we take lots of anti-inflamatories, the pain goes away, as does the natural healing power of inflamation. I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV, but it made sense to me. He also told me all kinds of kidney failure stories, so I've joined the "only take something" if I really need to, and usually then its small amounts of tylenol.

I find now that I really don't need it. Prolotherapy "cured" my chronic back pain and I've found other ways to deal with the aches and pains of training/life.
