Pre-race routine:

Set everything up and started finding people. We had to be out of Transition by 6:45. I was out at 6:40 and had 44 min to wait until my swim wave. The LAST swim wave. nice. I found Paulette, Jerry, Jen, Josh, Fitzy, Jeff, Harry and Sally before the race. Never saw Brian, Jeramiah, Jot, Rick, Ken or Wayne.
Event warmup:

I actually ran to a port-a-potty out on the course becuase the lines were too long. I then ran back and stretched a bit while putting on my wetsuit. I forgot to clip my nails, so my wetsuit got a bit nicked. Chris helped me get my sleeves up tight. It was the funniest thing ever!

Comments:

Ahh...the swim. I started right in front on the inside bouy. They were starting the waves so close togher that I got in first, went right to that buoy, and started my HR watch as he said 1 min to go. There were still tons of people getting in the water, and swimming out. As the gun went off, only a few people clamored past me. I was actually happy I started where I did. Sighting was perfect and straight all the way West until the last buoy, and still great as we rounded the turn to get to the other side. As soon as we turned East into the sun, it all went to hell. I went WAY out into the weeds!! I was just following the mob...just the wrong mob. Once I heard the kayaker screaming at us, I started angling back in, and probably swam my fastest here as I felt the pack was leaving me and I would be all alone!!! I wasn't too far off for the rest of it. Just kind of kept my slow pace and did my thing. I was really suprised at how many people from prior waves were still out there. Like right away I started seeing caps of all colors. I cannot believe there are worse swimmers than me out there and that they could still be above the water!! I managed to climb out of the lake on the mongo steps by myself. I get to the wet suit strippers, and ONE lady is trying to help me as others stand and stare. I finally say "Why is only one person helping me?" Then a guy jumped in and they had it off me lickety split. (Being a professional stripper as I am, I found the stripping to be less than stellar. When *I* strip, I do a much better job)! Out of the water after my slow swim I was 697 overall.
Transition 1
  • 04m 57s
Comments:

T1 involved me running my camera to Chris who was standing outside the fence. I also had to pull my bike shorts up over my wet arse, so that was fun. Glad I had them on, though. My nether regions were SO DONE with about 10 miles to go on the bike!!
What would you do differently?:

I wanted to be under 5, and I just made it!
Bike

Comments:

Mount my bike out of T1, and with my first pedal stroke KA-CHUNK! My chain falls off. I say "Are you f-ing kidding me?" And throw it on in about 2 seconds. That's all it takes to get your fingers completely covered in grease. Nice. That left me with one clean pinky to pick my nose, or dig in my eyes with. I felt pretty good and strong on the bike until about the last 7 miles. I was just done. I still was going strong, but it took a lot of mental effot to keep it up. I found a girl in my AG who was with me most of the way. We cheered each other on. She finally pulled away toward the end, and then smoked me on the run, but oh well. OMG! There was one guy on the bike with a rockin body who was shirtless and had on these teeny-tiny little bike shorts that said something across the back. Usually only the super fast people wear crap like that, but I was passing him. So as I did I say "Yeah baby! Thank you for those shorts!" He replies "Just for you!!" Never saw him again. Bummer. Josh and I rode together for a whle on the bike. It was nice to have someone to talk to. Mikeg123 and I kept passing each other on out and backs. Paulette yelled at me on a final out and back on the last lap of the bike. I also saw Fitzy and Jen starting the Quarterman run while I was still on the bike. On the bike I climbed up 140 spots to 557.
What would you do differently?:

I was happy about the bike. I was able to eat all I was supposed to plus some, and used some of the water on the course to fill up my aero bottle.
Transition 2

Comments:

Takes a bit for me to get my IT Band brace on as I have to tie on a sweat band first, then the IT Band brace over the top.
What would you do differently?:

Should have sprayed more sunscreen. I am crispy fried now!
Run
  • 2h 27m 42s

Comments:

The run. What to say about the run. It was 94 degrees *EDIT* Newspaper reporting this morning that a new record was set with 97 degrees on Sunday. WOOT!!! ..... and the only shade you get is when you go under a bridge. It's fleeting at best. I was just trying to run aide station to aide station. I met up with Harry around mile 3 and walked with him and some guy for a bit. That actually helped get my legs under me and my heat under control. I think the only race I have walked so much in was Show Low when my IT band was totally jacked and I was walking peg-legged. The heat was pretty demoralizing. I am NOT a "just happy to finish" person, but that was totally out the window once the run started. I truly was going to be happy with finishing. I knew my goal of 6 was out, but thought MAYBE I could make 6:15. With a few miles to go I could tell that was out so I picked it up and shot for 6:20. As I rounded the last bend under the last bridge my watch said 6:18 and change so I really picked it up. At this point a girl in front of me cut the corner and that p*ssed me off. I kept up with her and my goal was to beat her across the line. I did, and beat the 6:20 goal, so at least I had a little something to be happy about at the end. All my peeps were out there cheering for us HIMers, eventhough they had finished their quarterman races, and were hot and tried as well. It really helped!! I also saw Travis and Comodore on the run. Seeing them was a real boost!!
What would you do differently?:

Choose a race where there is no chance of it being 94 degrees!!! OH...and make sure my chapstick is in my run belt. Grrrrrrr!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked straight to my bag to get my recovery drink. Changed into dry clothes, and hung with my peeps. We then attended the athlete meal at Monty's. We ate in the hot sun and dashed before the awards. I then laid on the cement floor of the parking garage for 45 min as my husband drove back to unlock the truck. Yeah..my keys were in my tri bag which was locked in the truck. The day was just never going to end!!
Oh, and for future race nutrition planning, I burned 3,384 calories during today's race. That's 2 days worth of calories for me in 6 hours. Yikes!!

Great job! I can tell you I was happy to get off the bike at 30, I can imagine at 50 I would have been ectstatic.

We need to go running during the summer. Changes your perspective on heat.

I saw Harry on the bike ride, and Jerry and Paulette before. Us quarter people were so much earlier there weren't many people around when i tried to track down numbers.

Sorry I didn't stay around...had the whole family out and since they'd been up since 5, they were pretty wiped, so needed to head home and get them sleep.

I can guarantee that the heat took more than 19 minutes from your time.  If it had been the normal temp, you'd have hit your goal without any problem. It was VERY hot.  Those of us just watching the race were fighting over shade spots.  All those summer runs did you good.

I should have gotten a major award for getting that wetsuit on you! In fact, I probably need to log a good 30 min. workout session after that   Funny stuff.

Your training showed yesterday. Not only did you move up over 140 places on the bike, but 14 more on the run.

Great job. Most people "just finish" their first HIM. You had to do yours in record temps and still completed everything in great times!

Nice report and pictures.  To bad you never saw your short shorts guy again and to bad he wasn’t just a touch faster than you.  Perhaps pace booty for you.

Overall, nice work for such a hot day.  Let’s see some lobster burn pictures please.

Great job out there Tanya

I had a feeling it was going to be a hot day out there but I figured not hot enough to keep you from finishing this darn thing. (With a strong Kick, no doubt)

That is so cool that you raced with so many folks that you knew. Seeing friendly faces out on the course is absolutely the best.

Take Care and Recover Well. (Oh, and I think IMCal 70.3 still has a few slots left)

Great job. Great way to step up to a challenge on your first 1/2 IM. It was hot out there, and like you said, shade was nowhere to be found.

When you asked me 2 months ago whether you could ramp up to a half by SOMA my first reaction was, "Oh hell yeah you can finish a half!" Great job of pulling it together and doing what you had to do to get there.

I've been dying to read your RR because I only got to chat briefly after the race! You did amazing. When I saw you come around after one lap of the run, I was thinking you were looking so strong and it totally amazed me that you were able to grit your teeth and run in that heat. You are such an inspiration! I'm glad I saw you finish

I sooo wanted to stay and watch you finish. You are an inspiration. Your training out at BJC, the hill runs, Tour de Gilbert and Usery all paid big dividends for you. It all made you that much stronger to deal with the heat.

You and Josh passed me while I was running. I'm not sure what lap you were on but you both looked great.

I can't wait to talk to you in person about it.
