Extreme Veteran 1106 , Connecticut | Subject: ex-athena/clydes? Hi all, I came onto this thread wondering if any of you wonderful IM/IWM's started off fat and slow like me? I am on the Athena/Clyde threads, but we've in the same boat. I'd like to know that there is life as a fit/trim, moderately fast IM triathlete after starting as a mid-40's Athena? Inspiring stories welcome! Mitzi |

I am on the Athena/Clyde threads, but we've in the same boat. I'd like to know that there is life as a fit/trim, moderately fast IM triathlete after starting as a mid-40's Athena? Inspiring stories welcome! Mitzi I'm still waiting for the "moderately fast" part, but I have raced three IMs starting as a mid-30's Athena. I was a complete non-athlete who hated to work out. About once every three years I would join a gym, workout for 3 weeks, and then quit. Then I hit my 30s and started gaining weight overnight. It didn't help that my oldest son was diagnosed with cancer and I ate my way through his chemo treatments. I found triathlon through Team in Training and it literally saved my life. I've lost all of the weight that I gained (I just tried on a pair of pants today that I wore when I was 29! -- and they fit bitter than ever). And more importantly I am in far better shape than I was in my 20s. I'd love to be fast, but don't know if my body will ever be that. Some people will disagree with me, but I am in the "you don't have to be fast" to do an IM camp. They give the same medal and T-shirt to those that finish in 16:57 (as I did in my first race -- last official finisher at Wisconsin '05) as they do those who win your age group. My mantra is strong and steady finishes the race. Consistency has been far more important to me than speed. Now, that said, I will work on speed this summer in shorter races. I'd like to be faster, but I think that being fast will be harder on my body (and for sure my mind) than doing long distance races. Good luck! Melissa |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: ex-athena/clydes? I'm signed up to do my first IM at LP next July. I don't think I qualify as moderately fast but I'm a lot faster than I used to be when I started this.....I am fitter, have lots more fun and enjoy training and racing. I place 3rd from last in my first sprint, last in my first Oly, and this year my first HIM I was like 20th from last but was the 5th oldest women so not really surprising. I'm almost 46 and have been doing tris since '04. In my first tri I think I averaged 12 mph on the bike and now I hit 19-20 mph in most sprints/olys....maybe I'm fast on the bike not so much swimming & running but my run continues to improve. I've lost 98 pounds and hope to hit 100 soon..... look forward to the IM journey. Keep training smart, you'll keep getting fitter and faster and can do longer and longer races if you have the desire. |

Veteran 493 Cloverdale, BC | Subject: RE: ex-athena/clydes? In 2001, I weighed 290 pounds. I joined weight watchers and got my weight down to about 195, and started running in January of 2002. My weight bounced around between 210-215 for the next 3 or 4 years after that, and I kept running, mostly 50k trail races, with lots of back-of-pack finishes, and lot of running injuries. In 2005 I finally decided I wanted to be faster, so I went on a diet and lost about 50 pounds over 6 months. My half marathon time went from 1:52 to 1:35. And my 10k time went from 48 minutes to 41 minutes. Unfortunately a few months later, my marriage came to an end, I got really depressed, I developed a running injury, and I gained 60 pounds in 6 months. When I signed up for Ironman Canada 2007 in August of 2006, my weight was up to 230 pounds. But when I registered, I refused to check off the Clydesdale box on the entry form. I already knew first hand how huge of a difference losing some weight could make for my speed. So I put myself on a calorie reduced diet while I was logging huge training volumes. By the time the race came around in August of 2007, my weight was back down to 180 pounds. I finished in 10:51:53. I think that qualifies as 'moderately fast' |

Expert 839 Portland, OR | Subject: RE: ex-athena/clydes? I'm still technically an Athena (although not mid-40s yet) and I finished IM CDA this summer in 16:22 after losing 171lbs along the way. When I started I weighed 358lbs and walking up the steps was a challenge. You will learn a lot about yourself on the road to Ironman and it can be amazingly fun if you enjoy it and focus on the experience and the people who helped you along the way My full info and stories are on my blog: www.speedleopard.com Keep up the hard work and stick around here at BT the group on this forum is awesome! |

Master 2006 Portland, ME | Subject: RE: ex-athena/clydes? I haven't raced an IM but I can tell you that I did go from slow and fat (240#s, couldn't run to the end of my block.....very funny story on the first time I tried) to qualifying for IM 70.3 WC within a couple of years. It was until early this year that I lost my Clydes status but now my BF is in the single digits. I think it is cetainly possible for you to accomplish your goal. Just stay focused and and put the work in. |

In 8 years, I have gone from 380lbs to 180lbs...I started racing triathlon at 250lbs. I started training for my half ironman this year at 220lbs and took 40lbs off in the process through diet and workout. Im still slow..but getting better. Since then I've lost 60 lbs, run 3 marathons, 4 Olymipic Tris, 6 half ironmans, Ironman Florida in 2006, and the ultimate, the 2007 Ironman World Championships in Kona (Lottery winner). Believe in yourself and enjoy the ride. You never know where this journey may take you. |

Pro 4353 Wallingford, PA | Subject: RE: ex-athena/clydes? I'm about to turn 45. I started doing tris three seasons ago, at a point where I was moderately overweight (like maybe 30 - 35 lbs.). I dipped below the Athena cut-off for a bit last season, but put some weight back on over the holidays, etc. My goal is to get it off for good, and I'm just a few pounds above the Athena cut-off right now. (I'm 5' 9", and I will probably never be MUCH below 150 -- 145 is a pretty healthy weight for me, and where I hope to end up). I've worked pretty hard at this tri stuff, and my times have improved. I'm still not really "fast", but I AM getting faster, so it IS posssible to improve, even when you start in your 40's like us! (oh, btw, I'm not really an IM athlete, not yet anyway -- doing my first HIM this season, and contemplating full IM next year) |

Expert 760 Mt. Morris, IL | Subject: RE: ex-athena/clydes? I completed IMWI in 06 at 220+ (5'11" so accoriding to the BMI tables I was boarderline obese (bs), and finished in 12:45. I currently weigh 230 and am going to do IMWI again. I started Nutrisystem yeasterday to try to get down under 200lbs and go for a sub 12hr IM. The first time through, I didn't lose any weight and it frustrated me so I am going for drastic meassures to get down. The biggest problem I had (you may not) was the wear and tear on body from running so try to get the weight down before you have to hit big miles. |

Master 1254 Chesapeake, VA | Subject: RE: ex-athena/clydes? I started this endurance stuff in early 2004 at close to 250 pounds. At that time I could barely run 3 miles. My very first race was a 10k which I struggled to finish in just under an hour. Since that time, I've improved my 10k time to sub 43, run 8 marathons (including a 3:35 finish), and completed IM CdA last year (not fast, but finished). Anyone who dedicates themself to completing an Ironman can do it. Good luck to you! |

Elite 3488 Lakewood, CO | Subject: RE: ex-athena/clydes? I saw 247 on the scale when I decided it was time to turn things around. I was 221 when I did my first tri in July of 2004 - BOP swim, FMOP bike and BMOP on the run. Toed the line at IMFL last Nov, weighed in at 203 so I didn't get as lean as I had hoped for, but went just under 11:41 |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: ex-athena/clydes? Weighed 240 in Jan 2004 (at age 43). Hadn't had significant exercise in at least 7 years. By July 2007 (age 47), I was down to 165. Haven't done an IM or HIM yet, but just ran a sub-4 marathon last weekend on my second attempt, placing in the top 9% of the field (and am signed up for Vineman 70.3 in July). |

Regular 157 Warwick, RI | Subject: RE: ex-athena/clydes? Summer of 2006 I was 276lbs, I started losing weight through dieting but wasn't really exercising. My friend who was into tri's convinced me to buy a road bike. After a torturous 45 mile first ride, I still got back on that bike, from there I set a goal just to finish a sprint, this year I'll be doing my first Ironman, Arizona in November. It's awesome to see so many people on here have gone through the same things. I'm not an ex-clyde yet but I intend to be before November, 30 more pounds to go! |
