Tempe, Arizona

The Red Rock Company
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 52m 42s
Overall Rank = 151/593
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 23/57
Pre-race routine:

Traveling from N. CA to do this proved to be a bit easier than one would think. Lucky for me I was able to use a friend's Kestrel so I could leave my bike at home (more on that later...). Pre race was limited to the run from the car to the transition area with 5 minutes before the race start... Scrambled to get wetsuit on and body markings (after wetsuit was on - um, yeah..try THAT one again)
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 24m 27s
  • 1056 yards
  • 02m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

Problems with the sun and sighting on the return leg caused a bit of extra distance in the water. Combine that with the time it took to remove my wetsuit (I must be a bit chubbier than the last race...) my swim time is less than impressive. A full :30 - :40 seconds slower than training.
What would you do differently?:

Swim straight.
Use body glide on the sticky parts.
Lose weight or swim naked.
Transition 1
  • 03m 12s
Comments:

Holy crap - what was I doing for 3 minutes??? Not sure what was going on, but this seems impossibly slow.
What would you do differently?:

Probably not stop to read the paper.

Slip on bike shoes might help - the three strap roadies are a bit of a pain...
Bike
  • 1h 26m 8s
  • 29.2 miles
  • 20.34 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike - not as strong as I had hoped. The VO2 testing on Thursday may have hurt me a bit here, I was targeting 22 mph, but obviously didn't make it. *Might have been a bio-mechanical issue (bike fit) - the bars were short (cut by c-man) and I had a weird pain in my right hip between miles 10 and 18 that prevented me from really pushing hard.

I stopped for 2 minutes to see if I could assist the girl who crashed on the fast downhill left turn off of Center onto Washington - I was 100 meters behind when she went down - HARD - on her head. Terrible. The sound of her cry haunted me for the next hour... I hope she's ok.

- As I crossed 25 miles, I wondered aloud where in the world the turn toward the transition would be... then resigned myself to settle in and go with the flow. More than able to do the distance, but mentally challenged when I was looking for the end in stead of focusing on my pedal stroke and cadence.
What would you do differently?:

Ride faster. Drink More. Bring a Gel. Fuel better prior to race day...
Bring the Powertap next time.
Transition 2
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

Again, what in the world was I doing here... I was 'stuck' behind a big guy on the way into transition who couldn't seem to locate his aisle. Geez, I didn't have the legs to try to maneuver around him, so I cruised in his 2 mph draft (walking) through the transition area. I beat him out so no worries...
What would you do differently?:

Faster everything.
Run
  • 55m 58s
  • 6.55 miles
  • 08m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Great run for me. Seems like the knee issues are nearly behind me. I ran this exactly as planned and felt strong through the end.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Post race
Warm down:

Finish line, chip removal, water bottle, banana, med tent for ice. Had a hard time with the elevated heart rate - likely due to the heat (85+ at the end). Walked it off, then off to breakfast (protein pancakes @ US Egg).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not having done any speed work is my limiter here, but since I'm recovering from a knee injury and am trying to build my base for CA 70.3 and CDA, I'm very happy with my current status/results.

Event comments:

Great race - some confusion with regard to mileage on the bike, but overall SOMA ranks high on my list of favorite events. Great job Red Rock Co.

Nice job! Entertaining RR!  Just be happy you finished before it got to be 97!!  Looks like you had an awesome race dispite your knee and other issues.

Thanks Tanya!
I'd forgotten just how much the heat affects you during races in Phoenix. Training in the Bay Area has really spoiled me over the last few months.

Thanks lobo!

The crash I witnessed was bad - first lap of the Qman bike.
I felt so bad for the girl and was afraid she'd get run over by someone else - thankfully the DPS officer was 50 feet away and called it in right away.

Crazy thing is I saw two crashes on that same corner last year.
