Subject: I have pain on the inside of my shin. HELP!
The muscle on the inside of my left shin realy starts to hurt when I put in a lot of miles or do speed work. I had a doctor tell me that it was a torn solius muscle, and that I needed to rest it . I get fitted for all of my running shoes at fleet feet, ice after runs, stretch befor and after and pop pills to reduce swelling, but the pain is always there. I feel that I cant get to the next level in my running because of this. This has been going on for about two years now . Just wondering if anyone else has had any problems in this area?
Thanks!

You don't keep any logs, so it's hard to tell. But, I'd say that if you're doing the right things - icing, stretching, getting properly fitted for shoes, etc., then it might be a product of your training (or perhaps a biomechanical issue, but you've seen a doc who doesn't seem to be concerned about that). You mentioned speed work and "getting to the next level;" is it possible you push yourself more than you should when you start to feel a little better?

Also, you could try to see a rolfer or someone who practices ART.

ive had similar problems, diagnosed as "shin splints" >> a pretty generic title that could apply to many injuries. it's said to be an overuse injury - but i wasn't over using myself when they started - but i have had them on and off for the last few years. they are starting to get a little better - i started running more on trails or gravel, i implemented a couple of ideas from the book Chi-Running - such as when you lift your leg up to do another step, letting your foot be floppy - this relaxes the shin/calf muscles. i also got one of those discs that looks like an ab ball, but is flattened out somewhat. if you stand one footed for a while on that, it really stretches and strengthens your shin muscles.

I had similar problems as I built up my running mileage. I found having a sports massage every four - six weeks really helped and she used ultra sound in the particular spot. My problem was diagnosed as inflamation of the periostium (sp?). Which is something different but the symptoms are probably similiar. I had regular massahe over 3-4 months and now I see here if I fell the need for a good massage on that area.

I agree you're doing all the right things, but perhaps seeing someone who specialises in sports injuries for sports massage might be useful

I've been having what sounds like similar problems all this year. Managed to run and train through it - usually the pain went away after running a few miles then flared up after I stopped. After a month off, I tried starting up slowly on a treadmill and it came right back. I'm going to see a sports medecine specialist next week - I'll let you know what he recommends.

I deal with similar symptoms, but I don't know if what I have is what you have. I had to cut out all speed work. Also, on the advice of my sports chiropractor, I began wrapping my foot to support my arch to act as the spring that it is, thus having less impact on my lower legs. I use the tape that looks like ACE bandage, but it's sticky (I forget what it's called).

Wrap along the inside of the ankle toward the toes, then across the top of the foot. Turn under the foot at the outside edge across from the arch. Then along the bottom of the foot to the arch. As you come up from the arch to the top of the foot again, pull the tape to create extra support on the arch. The tape now sticks to itself on top of your foot in front of the ankle. Continue with the tape behind the ankle across the achilles, and stick it to itself again at the inside of the ankle. Cut any excess off.

If you have any questions, PM me.

Mike

I had a similar problem last winter training for my first marathon.   I found that not running on a treadmill helped a lot.  Also, arnica gel (found at central market) worked well after a run.

good luck!

I'd second the advice bolded above.
