Subject: RE: how fast do u swim the 100?
In high school, when I was swimming 5-6 hours a day in 2 or 3 a day practices, I could crank out a :52/100y, and about a 1:50/200y. I believe I even did a 5:08/500. I wish I was that fast still.

A month ago, I did a 6:59/500y in a indoor SCY pool. I was quite happy with that. Usually, I have one of the top swim splits in the local sprint tri's and at one in September, I was the 3rd person out of the water with an 8:26/500y swim.

My biking is getting better, and I can average ~20mph now, but I am still struggling with my running - I am currently in the 9ish minute miles mode - though once my bronchitis goes away, I plan on rectifying that with 30 days with 30 runs at least 30 minutes in length.

currently training pace for me has been 1:50 ~ 1:55 / 100 on 200 or 250 yard sets - open turns - 1500~2000 yard work outs. I think I could break 1:40 if it was a stand alone 100, maybe faster. I know i would be faster if i did flips.

I just started swimming this summer and have seen my time drop from 2:30 or so 100 yds to what it is today. I start a swim program next week and hope to improve this even more.

In my two sprints i was about ~2:00/100.

Now this thread just got depressing. I've been frustrated but basically accepting of my sucky 100 times, since I'm a new swimmer and only got started in April. But I'm still stuck at about 2:45-2:50 in 500-yard sets (on a good day); I think my fastest 100 ever was 2:34. *sigh*

Swimming definitely will be my focus in the off season. I've only taken one class, back in May, I believe, but I'll be signing up for more in a month or so. For now, my race-plan is survival!

Dude, you're still faster than me, so don't be depressed.

I'm in the 3:00 area myself.  I can move my arms faster, but I just finish the 100 more tired, not more quickly.

In the past, I've had instructors giving me tips.  I'm just slow. There was a time when I drilled and drilled and drilled -- each swim workout was just more drills.  It got to the point where it was discouraging and I had to take a year off from swimming altogether.

Although I am back in the water now, and considering shelling out the big bucks for private swim lessons.

And spokes, if you were to ever do a race where I was, you would most certainly not be the last person out of the water... women's waves start later.  Seriously, at my races, it's super easy to find my bike since there are usually only two of them racked when I get to T1 -- mine and the 73 year old woman who swims even slower than I do.

In high school and college I was :47 seconds, now I can still swim pretty quickly, swimming in a pool and just a single 100 I clocked a :53.41 in July before Ironman. Now in a race, it depends on the distance, I can average anywhere from 1:05-1:45. Without lane lines it’s hard to stay straight in the murky waters of the Midwest.

I started swimming in August for my race at the end of September this year. I started out averaging around 3:30 per 100m. I swam 3 days a week to get better, also read the beginning of the TI book. Now I am around 2:10 for 100m, still slow. And in my race which was my first OWS i did 2:07. So still slow. I will be joining a masters swim, doing drills, etc. In my short experience, logging laps helped me feel more comfortable in the water, which helped with speed since my body was relaxed. Plus I think TI helped a ton, even though I have implemented through like chapter 3

kproudfoot - 2007-11-07 12:22 PM I average around 2:00 in races. I have done a stand alone at 1:30. Like Rick said no masters for me and 1.5 years of swimming. I am also slow in my mind but probably faster than most realistically.

Slow is so relative. I'm thinking of giving up on tris - and just doing dus - because I can't get my pool times down below 3:00/100 no matter how much I work, drill etc. Its very discouraging to be one of the last, if not the last of the water, even if you're an OK cyclist and runner.

Totally agree

the fastest I've been was the end of last feb where I was putting in 5 days a week at 8 to 10 km (which is nothing compared to real swimmers).  I managed to hit 2:00 for 2000 yards and could hit 1:45 ish on a stand alone 100.  Before that month (when I was doing only 3 days a week, but higher yardage per workout) I was in the 2:30's.  The higher frequency, lower yardage (per workout) technique really paid off for me.

I haven't been in the pool for a while, so I'm not sure what I'll be doing once I start again.

Believe me. I know.

All those people I beat out of the water and whip past on the bike just come back to pass me by mile 4ish in an Olympic run and by mile 7-8ish or so in a Half run. I recognize them.

In training my average per 100 pace is about 1:45 ish without pushing. I can hit 1:23-1:26 during interval sets. OWS race times are usually in the 1:30-1:35ish range, depending on how far off I sight. (!!) Whoops.

Spokes, tell your self your slow/horrible swimmer(or whatever) enough.. and you will be.

Seems to me, from what I've read is, you've given up on getting good before putting the effort down.

I just started tri's (and swimming) this season.  I went from having to stop and rest just after 25 yards to swimming without stopping for over 1,200 yards.  I average 2:30-2:45/100.  Slow by comparison, but at that pace I can just keep going.  I have found I really love swimming, even though I am slower than most.

I average 2:00-2:10 per 100 yards.  I have been trying to break 2:00 for a while now, but no luck yet.  I am a mediocre biker and a good runner, so by the end of the race I am usually catching up.  I have spent a lot of time trying to swim faster, but have recently decided that it just isn't worth the trouble.  I am going to concentrate on the bike instead (far more gains to be found there).

100 meter sprints  repeats with an in-water start and open turn I hold 1:15- 1:17.  Off the block with flip-turn 1: 05

Sprint distance race (750m) no wetsuit- 1:25-1:30

1:25-1:30 average over 2000m distance in the pool.

Tri pace is hard to judge because of where transitions are and inaccuracies in bouy placements.  My fastest in a tri is the Mosseman OLy at 1:24/100.  In the pool its a 1:06.  In my training I am usually pace at a 1:20 to 1:30.  Mom would throw us in the lake before we could talk.  So it was swim or sink with big stinky diaper.

I absolutely agree. I swim about the same pace and you, am an extremely average cyclist and a slow runner. No matter how many times I've been in the top 3 in my AG out of the water, I'm still MOP by the end of the race. I could probably average better swim splits if I put more time into it or went to a masters class, but I'll get a far better ROI from more time on the bike and/or running.

One's end-of-race rank is rarely determined by the swim; it's just not a long enough part of the race. I think it was on this site that I read that for the average racer, his/her overall race rank is often roughly equivalent his/her rank for the bike segment. I've found that to be quite accurate for the most part.

I've done 1:26 in a sprint and 1:40 in an Oly. (Man that water was rough)
