Panama City Beach, Florida
United States
Ironman North America
72F / 22C
Sunny
Total Time = 10h 21m 6s
Overall Rank = 250/2270
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 43/362
Pre-race routine:

2 Oatmeal, 1 cup of coffee, 1 beagel, 1 banana 40 minutes prior, 1 gel, 15 minutes prior.
Event warmup:

50 yard swim
Swim
  • 1h 00m 27s
  • 4156 yards
  • 01m 27s / 100 yards
Comments:

start was brutal, the roughest I have been in. I think I was too far to the right (off of straight line).
What would you do differently?:

line up closer to the faster swimmers at the start.
Transition 1
  • 04m 2s
Comments:

trouble getting suit over watch.
What would you do differently?:

Have to figure out how my new watch should be worn on the swim to be able to remove the suit easier.
Bike
  • 5h 31m 23s
  • 112 miles
  • 20.28 mile/hr
Comments:

felt like I was holding back first 75 miles, great strategy and was absolutely the right pace.
Transition 2
  • 04m 32s
Run
  • 3h 40m 24s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 08m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

felt great off of the bike. First 3 miles were sub 7:30 and felt like I was holding back.
What would you do differently?:

I used fuel belt with 3 gels in 3 bottles (with water) and 1 bottle with just water. Took a hit (about 1 gels worth) every 20 minutes. Worked perfectly. Would consider having additional bottles with gels in special needs bag. Maybe 2 with gel and 2 with water. Had to walk through several aid stations on the 2nd loop because I needed fluids for the gels.
Post race
Warm down:

massage

What limited your ability to perform faster:

needed fluid and had to walk through 4 aid stations on second loop

Solid race!  You ever chafe up much from running a long distance with the fuel belt.  Mine always leaves battle scars around my torso.  You slammed the run and picked up a ton of spots.  Congrats.  You've put together an incredible race.  Grats Ironman!
