I jogged the course. Did a couple of pickups in the last 1/2 mile
Run
  • 23m 39s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out pretty fast. Finished the first mile in 7:20. I really have to learn how to judge pace better, because I ended up finishing the second mile at like 15:30, so I realized I had to pick up my pace more at the 2-mile mark.

I was surprised to see I came in 2nd in my AG (7/111 female finishers). I think they messed up and gave me the third place AG prize instead of the 2nd place (at least that was what was written on the envelope), but it was a really nice prize -- a $25 gift certificate to a sweets store in town. Yum, I picked up some boxes of home made truffles for gifts.
What would you do differently?:

I would have kept the pace better in the second mile. I need to improve my ability to judge how fast I'm going. Maybe wear the Navman during races too?

Also, I'd bring my inhaler on cold days like this. I was coughing quite a bit.

Event comments:

Very nice race. Well-run, organized, and friendly. The entry was inexpensive and they were pretty generous with the prizes.

Thanks Pam. It was small local/community race. I think probably 20% of the people there were walking it Still, as someone who could barely run a mile without walking two years ago, it's always fun and a little surprising to actually place.

Congrats, that is a pretty speedy race.

One of the things I have found to help me go out a little slower is start back a little more.  That way I am not up with the really speedy rabbits.  I find that I'll run some with the front, then end up having nothing more to go on.  Plus I love to pass people as I am running the last half.  Those folks that start out too fast and then die.

I have found that many times even wearing a GPS device, you will not look at it to see how fast you are going.  So you still end up heading out at 7:20 miles and do the 2nd mile at 8:XX and the third either between or even slightly slower.

Weird how your finish placing can vary by who shows up. I'm still getting used to that. Congrats on a good race.

I too struggle with pacing. I just run / stumble / lumber on until I get the beep to stop. Just like cycling, I always go out too fast. I like the OP idea of trying to start mid to later in the field to control it,
