Pre-race routine:

Went out for Pizza on Saturday night, got home early and went to bed, while it was starting to drizzle. Not a good sign for Sunday's race :)

Woke up at 5:30, before the alarm. Got out of bed, puttered around a bit and then woke up my wife and kids. Had a bananna, muffin and glass of OJ.

We left the hotel at 6:15, cause we weren't that far from the race, but discovered that they had shut off the roads to the free and close parking at 5:45. Something to remember for next year. So, we had to park about a mile and a half away. The rain had stopped, but there was an absolutly terrible wind kicking up.

We got to the start line and took off the sweats, just as the wind died down (SWEET). Got lined up in the C corral, and waited for the start for about 10 minutes.

Comments:

What a great course, especially when the rain and wind died down. Running along the Pacific coast is just an experience not to be missed. It was an out and back course, with bands in Monterey, and then just listening to the waves from mile 6 to mile 10.

The run just felt good. The start was mad, but not to bad, with a lot of moving in and out. By the time we got to mile 2, everything had pretty much stabilized.

Went through the tunnel to the sounds of a bagpipe player, who sounded like a whole band with the echo. Very nice.

Most of the course was up and down rollers, with one major hill around mile 5. Nice bands playing, good amount of aid stations. The drummers at the turn around were completely into it, despite the chill in the air.

The mile markers seemed a little off, at some points, but that's quibbling on what was a very nice race.
What would you do differently?:

:) I got the time I wanted, so I'm not sure. Possibly not eat the Pizza the night before? I think that I want to start trying to take more GUs on training run, and keep to a 45 minute fueling process. I do start to run out of energy pretty quickly.

I have heard this is such a beautiful race. Congrats on a great performance--sub 2:00 is sizzling! Especially with knee and shin issues!

Awesome job!  An "under 2 hours" goal and you made it with room to spare.  Sounds like you hit the nutrition issue right on the money.  Pizza...I'd stick with what works!
