i've been going up and down whether do to run inside or outside, now that winter is approaching. what do you guys all do? i pretty much despise the treadmill, but i can do it w/o shooting myself. however, running in the cold is tough too, especially since i have a fall-time cold right now and i don't want to make it worse. .

I never run inside ... period ........

I've trained through the last two winters fully outside, including my Boston training.

Rain, sleet, snow, dark of night and all that.

I don't have a treadmill, so training inside it tough on my knees cornering down my main hallway.

I'm a HUGE proponent of running outside, especially in cold weather.  Last year I did the main part of my Disney marathon training in the snow and wind here in Upstate New York.  The only trick is to adjust your training to avoid ICE, and it can make running at night a very dangerous proposition.

I've found that running outside on a cold day does wonders for my sinuses and tends to clear out any cold I might have.  But that's just me.

I vote outside.

25°F is my lower limit, thank goodness it rarely gets lower than that here. Up to that point, though, I love running in the cold.

Just wish I could.Cry

Definately outside. I do run inside if it's cold and pouring rain or when I'm travelling and don't know the area well enough to feel safe. I lived in Minnesotta for 3 years and ran outside year round. I can relate 100% to Condorman's comment about it clearing out the sinuses.

Now riding in the cold would be a different answer. I can stay warm running but haven't figured out how to get warm while riding.

Dress for it. Until it gets down into the low teens (which is very rare around here), I run outside. Now if you add darkness or rain to the mix, then I'll opt for a treadmill...

But having a cold, you might be better off skipping it entirely.

I run outside all winter here in MN regardless of temp. I think last yrs low temp record was minus 10.

Only exceptions were a couple yrs back when we got a nasty rainstorm and everything froze and when it snowed a ton and there were no road shoulders to run on.

Another outdoors nut.  Will do the occassional tempo stuff indoors, but most of my runs are outside down to -10.  Get you some good layers and you are golden.

Dress appropriately and you'll be plenty warm outside. Ice is bad though.

Yeah, dont do speed work or run angry when it is icy.  Put my azz on the elliptical 2 weeks due to some knee issues last winter.  Boo!

I do run inside some (on treadmill in basement) but that is when I need to - like watching the kids before mom gets home.

Otherwise, outside. LIght or dark, rain or snow, etc. I love cold weather running. It just feels so great to be out there when everyone else is inside.
You need decent gear, but that is no different than anything else in this sport.

Some rules of thumb - for a normal training run (nothing all out) add 20 degrees to outside temp. For race pace, add 30. What I mean by this is if it is 20 degrees outside, dress such that you would be okay just standing around at 40 (or 50) degrees. This is because of the heat your body generates.
If you are warm when you start, you are dressed too warm. I figure mile 1 is cold, mile 2 is warming it up but still slightly cool, mile 3 and beyond feel great.

Haven't been on a treadmill in years and I run all winter long.  I think last year's record run was -25C.  I even ran on a trip up to Yellowknife last year (although it was a warm snap when I was there - only about -15C).

25F cold?  You know it's cold when the snow you are running on is nice and crunchy sounding.

Run outside in the winter by all means!  After all you will be stuck running inside during the summer months when temps are about 120 degrees multiple weeks in a row.  So enjoy the cooler temps now!  Wait, do the Phoenix, Arizona rules not apply elsewhere?  J

I don't live too far from you (Spokane area) and it's outside for sure. One thing that my brother just bought me that will come in handy for after dark is a Petzl headlamp. Just dress for it and don't over extend cold muscles.

TIP........"Yaktrax" work great for running in slick conditions. http://yaktrax.com/ I would get the "pro" model for running.

Outside.. freezing for the first mile or two is better than wanting to bang my head against a brick wall on a treadmill inside Dress appropriately and your good to go. Plus, I hate being inside ALL the time in the winter, so its a good way to get out

I try to run outside year around. I'll go down to about 15 degrees before I'll run inside.

Outside all the time. The lowest I ran in was -33 celcius (-27 F). It's all about dressing accordingly, and being smart about it. Of course, I guess in my part of the wolrd we are just used to it... My 5:00AM morning runs are already done in -5 celcius (except today), so we gradually get in the "cold weather" running mode.

One suggestion would be (if you decide to run outdoors for the winter) is to start doing it early, so that when the temp really drops, you will not have a huge shock!

I'm with Bear.. 25 is my lower limit too.  I love to run in the cold, but 25 is TOO cold for me.  I hate the treadmill but was forced to it during those lovely ICE STORMS we had in Oklahoma last winter.... thankfully, I won't be an Oklahoman for much longer.

Hey Rick... Any ice storms in Michigan?

Outside, but be safe. If it is cold enough for Hypothermia, then I take my cell phone. I live in Central Illinois, and we get a lot snow and high winds in the winter. The nice thing is you don't need near the hydration in the winter months, and I don't have to carry as much water on LSD.

This is me also. I am planning on running outside all winter long here as long as the roads hold up. Biking though is different. I can't stay warm on the bike and if I put enough clothes on to stay warm I feel and look stupid.

My bike is screaming my name, but I just can't bring myself to ride when it is in the upper 20s and lower 40s. I want to, but with running I can stay warm enough that it doesn't bother me.

wow - now i really feel like a pansy. it really isn;t too cold - i just need to get proper attire. back in high school, i used to run sometimes in the snow with something similar to yak-traks, but instead of coils they had studs (metal spikes, basically) and they worked great.

My plan this year is to run outside as much as possible.  I couldn't last year due to an injury, but this girl's gettin' herself some Yak-trax...

My wife bought me new Aero bars last Christmas and I went out for a 15 miler on Christmas day. Looked like Santa on Fugi. My toes were numb for hours!
