Veteran 437 | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose The coldest I have run in was 3 degrees F. This was for a 5k race last Feb. I would run in colder I think, but just have not had the chance I guess. It was cold but fun. After the race there was not much standing around and talking, that is for sure. The water bottles were starting to freeze and all food was rock solid. |

Regular 77 Manassas, VA | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose Last winter was my first year training for tris and really running. I feared running in anything colder than 40-deg - just couldn't get motivated to go outside so I slogged it out on the dreadmill. Fast forward 11 months. I ran this morning at 36-deg and felt overdressed (thick sweats). I really look forward to cold weather running now. I'll take indygreg's suggestion to heart and pretend it's warmer than it is. As others have posted, watch out for ice. My college roommate twisted his ankle badly on ice three weeks before Boston in 1994. Three weeks, zero running, finishes his first marathon in about 4hr. Veteran 437 | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose Oh yeah, safety is key. when there is ice, use good judgment . . . sometimes better to stay in then get hurt in the dark where reflective stuff and I highly recommend lighting. I have a headlamp and some blinky red lights on my backside. Just understand that even with reflective stuff and these types of lights, it is still iffy out there. Watch out for cars because they might not be looking for you. This is just human nature . . . during the afternoon on a beautiful day drivers seem to be looking for people/kids much more. When it is dark and 10 degrees out they are not looking at all. I think this makes a huge difference. |

Champion 10018 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose I bought something like Yaktrax last year and never actually used them. I found running and being able to see (either in the day, or with a light at night) was enough to keep my footing. Which brings me to my real reason to post which is that a headlamp is mandatory. Running outside rules. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! (In Minnesota I find that I am not tough enough to go outside when there's a wind chill advisory, warning me of how my skin might actually freeze or whatever. So major props to the folks in MN and similar climates that truly run year round.) |

Bob 2194 Binghamton, NY | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose I do both. I have a treadmill that I use when it's raining and cold or if I just have a short run in the evening. Most of my running is outside. I am very comfortable down to about 0 degrees. I did 6 miles in -14 degrees and that was a pain in the arse having to deal with pulling the scarf up and down to breathe or thaw my face out. Once you figure the clothing needed for different temps it's pretty comfortable. 1 pair of tights, an underarmour shirt and a long sleeve cotton t-shirt get's me to about 15 degrees. (A hat and gloves are a given below 35 degrees!!) It's fun seeing the reactions from people when you said you ran for an hour when there are freezing temps too. Have fun!! |

Champion 9407 Montague Gold Mines, Nova Scotia | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose Outside right up to -30C (or colder with the windchill) for almost every run Occasionally I'll run inside if the weather is really bad (very high winds, blizzard, etc). Elite 3067 Cheesehead, WI | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose Last year (first year at tri stuff and running for that matter) I ran inside all the time. Felt safer on the tready in terms of controlling speed, distance, rain, wind, temps etc... BUT then I started to run more outside... and then signed up for the Crummy Winter Challenge here to gain suckage points for working out outside. And oddly enough, I love it!!! I really look forward to running outside now and the cold-- cold schmold! I get pretty sweaty anyhow and warm right up. Ok, so my hands suffer a bit but I have heavier gloves I can drag out soon. I do have cleaty type things to 'attach' to my sneaks come snow but not sure if I'll just wing it on packed snow anyhow. Outside makes the time go faster, I feel better with the wind in my face, and I work more muscles than on a treadmill. However, since I'm a novice with this outside freezin' my butt off stuff (well not really) we'll see what happens come sub-zero temps. (but I have xcountry skiied with 20 below windchills and I survived ) Go for it! Outside! |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose I try to run outside all winter. My lungs don't always cooperate since I'm asthmatic and cold is one of my triggers. Days that I'm having problems or if it's raining hard, I run inside. It's kind of fun. People think you're really crazy. |

Veteran 264 Wilmington, NC | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose Outside, for sure, always. I'll bet I have not run on a treadmill more than 15-20 times in my life. It helps that it rarely gets that cold here, but my vote is outside. |

Extreme Veteran 438 Surprise, AZ | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose I ran outdoors today but it was 90 out (in Phoenix) I always run outdoors unless it is over 115 by ten in the morning. I use to run outdoors in the midwest all winter till I moved here, know when I go back home for Christmas I can't run outdoors if it drops below about 35. |

Expert 696 Sugar Hill, GA | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose I'm a convert to running outside. I ran inside all last winter and dreaded the idea of going back to the treadmill. Last week when the temp dipped to 32 degrees I thought I'd give the ol' treadmill a try again. I couldn't stand it. I've been outside since, regardless of temp, and suspect I will be through the winter as long as it is not raining. |

Bob 2194 Binghamton, NY | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose I think the treadmill is a very important training tool. I have done a couple 3 hr treadmill runs with the kids bringing my my nutrition and refilling water bottles. It's a very controlled environment to work on nutrition, HR at different paces, etc. Another great thing about treadmills is after 3 hrs and 20+ miles on a treadmill, you feel that you can accomplish ANYTHING!!! Mental training!! |

Veteran 231 Sunny Oregon | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose Without hi-jacking the thread, since the overwhelming consensus is to run outside in the cold, any tips for cold AND wet? 38 and rainy isn't uncommon in the beautiful Pacific NW in the winter months and being new to all of this, I'm having a hard time working up any enthusiasm to go out in those conditions. |

Elite 3494 Renton, Washington | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose I love to run outside when I can! Rain or shine to be honest. Last year when we had a massive snow storm (Massive for the PNW) I was outside all the time. Not quite that cold here at the moment but can't wait till it is! Maybe it'll speed my times up a bit |

Master 2235 Pacific Northwest | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose I prefer running outside, but am not a good rain runner (which is sorta bad for the NW!). Perhaps I need a new raincoat (long story). Still, the rain here usually is off and on, so there's often a nice little break to get outside and get the run done. I hop on the treadmill once in a while if I am at the gym and don't have anything else I need to do, or if I want to top off my workout or if I am waiting for a class to start. The cold doesn't bother me--I like being out there when it's crisp--it makes me run faster! When it snows, I prefer playing outside with the kids, not running. I may snowshoe this year if I can get my act together since there are so many amazing mountains just a hop, skip and a jump away. |

Coach 10487 Boston, MA | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose as long as it is not raining or there isn't too much icing/black ice I like to run outside, you just need apporpiate clothing (layers, gloves, hat, etc) and you are good to go. I'veĀ done many sessions on a treadmill for convenience but I don't enjoy it as much. As long as you run, run wherever you want! |

Champion 7163 Verona WI--Ironman Bike Country! | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose Temperature will not affect my running outside. I have the cold weather gear to handle -35WC for at least an hour. The thing that sends me to the dreadmill at least a few times during the winter is icy roads or deep snow. I have strapped on my IPOD on the TM and cranked an 18m long run and while it was torture at least I got it done.

Master 1472 | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose I am outdoors for the most part. I have a treadmill if it came down to it but I hate it. Into the low 20's I am in shorts, with multiple layers up top. Socking cap, gloves and headlamp, since it seems to always be dark this time of year. Below probably 22-23 degrees the tight go on. Below 15 a layer over the tights as well. Ran last year up in Colville, WA in 3 degrees. That is getting down to my lower limit I think. |

Master 1529 Living in the past | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose I'm not winning any 'Craptastic' Challenge running indoors...so it's outside for me as much as possible. Just ran tonight, windy but still pretty warm by 'sconsin standards. 11 y/o son thought I cared more about this website (and challenge) than I did about my well being...being dark and crappy outside...he's probably right. |

Master 2406 Bellevue, WA | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose Here's a vote for running indoors when ithe weather is bad outside. Bad != cold, bad == raining, freezing, windy. I just don't see the point. It's not being a pansy, it's just pointless to layer up and still get soaking freezing cold when I could enjoy my run indoors. It takes me hours to warm up after something like that. It's just not fun. But when it's sunny cold and clear, I love to run. Last winter one of my most memorable training runs ever was a 20 miler on a my favorite route, but this time it was 20 degrees and snow covered, with the sun shining brightly and Mt Rainer clear on the horizon. BTW, I also put the top down on my convertible every chance I get. Anything above 35 and dry, and I'll put the top down. The manual says to not use the power top below 32, so I give it a bit of a buffer. I love cold sunny weather almost as much as hot sunny weather. I have to say I don't mind running on the treadmill. I just did an hour on it right now. 5 min warmup, 15 min easy pace 9:17, 20 min tempo pace 7:25, 15 min easy pace 9:17, 5 min cooldown. And I watched the first episode of the 4th season of The West Wing. It's 39 degrees outside and raining. Inside beats outside. Edited by brucemorgan 2007-11-15 1:10 AM |

Master 2429 Falls Church, Virginia | Subject: RE: run inside, or run in the cold (25-35 degrees), which do you choose I run outside almost all the time. Coldest I've run in was 19 degrees F, but there was wind, too. PR'd for my 10k, so cooler weather seems to agree with me. I have run on the treadmill a few times, mostly when there was bad road conditions combined with the night. That combination makes my husband nervous enough that its worth it to run inside. Although I'll usually skip the run entirely or reschedule before hitting the dreadmill. |
