Just curious how many people commute to work on their bike and how far?
For me, it's 15 miles, one way, 2 to 3 times a week.

If you scroll down on BT's home page, there is a poll with basically your same question on the left...

I'd love to, but I would have to ride over 100 miles RT in order to do it.  I've thought about driving half way and taking the bike the rest, but I haven't figured out a safe place to leave the car.

Huh, maybe I should occasionally go to the home page...I guess that is what I get for only reading the forums and my training page...

Another short trip here, a bit over 3km, and I go home for lunch too.

Though I'm not real keen about the lunchtime rides today. The radio this morning said we would be seeing 70 kph winds today and it sounds like they're here already.

29 miles one way, but I'll add the extra mileage per my training plan. Try to do this as much as I can as it is a convenient way to get those bike workouts in! Sadly, winter is just about here in W. Michigan and I'll soon be stuck in the basement riding the "drainer".....sigh.

I drive in on Monday's with my bike, then commute back and forth through the week and drive home on Friday. I need car access throughout the workday.

Commute is only 5 miles each way, but I extend it after work based on training plan "in-season", and based on how I feel this time of year.

Nearly* every day for over three years. About 6 miles and 500ft of climbing RT.

Worst day was commuting home Nov 30 2006 when there was about 6" of unplowed snow such that my tire studs couldn't even reach down to the ice-covered pavement. Yes, I am that stubborn. Innocent

*Occasionally walking or running as an alternative.

I try every Friday because I only teach one class and not many students stop by during my office hours that day. No one sees/minds if I wear sweats

But then sometimes I have more formal appointments or need to lug the laptop around and end up driving.

The ride is a pretty good workout. It's only about 10 miles each way but that's on hilly (436 ft climbing each way) and pretty rocky forest service roads and urban trails. I do it on the MTB. It takes me about 55 minutes each way.

HS Teacher: 15 miles round trip, 4 days a week average. Trying to hold that rate through the whole school year. So far so good. I figured that would be a pretty solid base!

25 miles one way. I usually get a ride home with my father inlaw (works down the road). Sometimes I stop at a "park and ride" and shorten it to 14 miles and ride both ways.
I try to do it everyday as it costs me $8 everytime I don't do it (Gas).

I was commuting 9 miles each way on the bike until last week when I bent a tooth on my big ring (actually tore the ring a little, too). I haven't taken the time to grab a crescent wrench and straiten it out or to track a replacement down on the net.

Plus it was 38deg F that morning, and it's getting colder. My cut-off is right around 32 to 35deg F. Below that it just isn't that much fun. Not to mention the growing possibility of frost and ice on the 4.39 inches of pavement that traffic grudgingly surrenders to me. :-o

But I hope to get the tooth straigtened and find a few more warmer days to commute before the snow sets in.

I have ~ 6 miles and it goes in waves depending on the training schedule, so call it 2-3 times a week.  I'll ride into work and ride home.  And I also drive in and will run home and ride in the next day.

so I am curious for those of you that commute.

What do you do about being all sweaty from riding? Do you take a shower afterward (and if not ewwwww).
What do you do with your clothes that you have to wear to work in?

I live 15 miles from work and would like to commute but I have to wear a suit and tie to work and no place to change. So I would have to take a shower and put on a non-winkled suit... so for me it doesnt make sense.

Bummer!

I have it made, we have a shower and wear shorts and T's.  I often bring in a couple of days worth of clothing. If not I also have a bike rack/bag on my MTB to lug things back and forth with.

Every workday for me.  8 miles typically into work and typically anywhere form 8-17 miles on the way home depending what route I take.

My commute is 15 miles each way. Try to do it 2 - 3 times a week most of the year unless I have to travel.

Fortunately my work place has a change room with showers, so it makes it easy for me. I usually bring a change of clothes and fresh bike clothes for the ride home on the days I drive. I take the dirty stuff home in a back pack.

I have three rules about commuting:
1) If it is raining in the morning I skip the ride. I will finish a ride and will ride home the rain because I have to but I won't start out in the morning in the rain.
2) If there is ice on the road skip the ride and use the trainer
3) My personal temperature comfort level is about 20 degF, so if it is below that I use the trainer as well.

Bring a few days worth of clothing, and keep them at work. If I do pack clothes, I'll wrap them in plastic bags then put them in my backpack. And yes, we have showers at work. Thank god.

I thought my 25+ each way was a lot.. but according to that poll several are doing 40+!
Or maybe I am misreading and that's round trip? hehe :p

Regardless of how many miles, it's good for you.

Bring the car & clothes in your bike on Mondays, and commute back and forth during the week. I'm fortunate enough that shorts/tee's work for me. I generally shower and change at work, and store the clothes for the return commute, either on the bike to dry (Park the bike indoors) or in a desk drawer.
