i know that this will depend upon the person but i was still wondering what distances do/did you do when you started to need either water or some sort of food (gel, bar, actual food). today i went on my longest run so far - about 6.5 miles, (woohoo!) and i want to do a couple half mary's in the spring - and i felt like i didn't need food/water today, but i think i would around. . 8 miles or more

so in summation, how long is your run have to be in order for you to wear a fuel belt/carry water/food?

You need to stop thinking in terms of distance and start thinking in terms of time.  Most endurance athletes use training programs based on time.  Your body only knows time, i.e. how long it has been working.  Not how far.  So, how much time do you take to run 6.5 miles?  I take gels and sports drink for runs over about 1 hour.  But, that also depends on the temperature.  If it's hot I'll grab my fuel belt for short run also.  Tomorrow I'm running for 1 hour 45 minutes and I'll take 5 gels and a Fuel Belt full of GU2O.

It depends on the outside temperature.  In the summer, I like to have water after about 45 minutes of running.  When it's cooler, I can usually go about an hour before I need water.  I can go longer without food, especially if I have a gel before I head out.

In the summer I typically have a water bottle with me all the time, even for 30 minute runs. But during cooler weather I can go up to like 50 minutes. Normally I don't use gels etc unless it's an hour and a half or longer.

Similar to what other people said, I drink more in hotter weather, so I'll bring the water for shorter stuff. In the fall/winter, I don't really need to drink until about an hour in, and I'll start in with the gels after 90 minutes. Took me a couple months to figure it out though.

Like everyone, it depends on the weather and other circumstances.  I did an 11 mile run on Thursday with only a gel, no water.  By mile 8 or 9, I was wishing I'd taken the time to clean and fill my Camelbak.  And that I'd brought another gel or some food.  But, then again, by that time I'd been out for almost 2 hours already.

On today's 7 mile run, I started feeling thirsty around mile 5.5 (about an hour in).  The temps were comparable on both days, but I was running a bit harder today than on Thursday.

Over the summer, I'd take fluids on anything longer than about an hour.  And gels for runs longer than about 90 minutes.

Doing longer races means you need to train smart and learn to nail your nutrition which you do during your training.

I bring water or some type of liquid with me almost every run. I have forgotten on a brick when I only run 20' and wish I had not forgotten.

I sweat a lot and need to drink 48 oz/per hour in the summer so I have trained myself to do that. Now if I don't drink I suffer. I'm not running currently due to surgery but am doing the elliptical and in 30' I finish a full water bottle and now that I'm going longer will start bringing two. It works well for me.

I have a couple of different ways I carry water and I use what works best for the length of run and how much hydration I need.

I do gels every 30' and electrolytes if I go much over 60'. Not that I probably need them so much on a 60 minute run but I need to keep training my body and get my nutrition down so it is easy come race time.

I like taking my fuel belt unless it's a really short run.  I'm finding that drinking water every mile or two alternated w/ accelerade and electrolyte water keeps me going and I carry a gu w/ me in case I'm feeling low on energy still.   But then I take my 2 liter camelback on training rides and can empty it in 2 hours -- need to refill if the ride is 3 hours or more.  It depends on how much you sweat and how much you ate beforehand.  I think I was a boy scout in a past life -- I'm always overprepared and I rarely regret it.  If I don't drink the accelerade on my run I drink it at the end for recovery.  IMO, your body will tell you how much you need -- everyone's different.

Unless it is hot, I plan my runs so I go by a drinking fountain or back by my car for water. I don't take gels for anything under 2 hrs. Congrats on the 6.5 miles!

Holy Overkill, Batman! Everyone's different, but I don't take 5 gels when I race a marathon. I might take one in a half marathon race.

I did a 2 hour run yesterday with nothing but water - drank maybe 18 oz. That was underdoing it some, though. I should have drank more. I did eat before I ran. Typically, I've been taking a gel if my run is longer than an hour or so, if I don't eat beforehand. I've found having water really helps, but I don't take any with me if I'm running less than 5 or so miles (less than 50 or so minutes).

First of all, congrats on your longest distance.

up to an hour, I don't bother to take water or any kind of food (this assumes it's not super hot of course).

I don't need any nutrition up to 2 hours.  If I plan to go longer than 2 hours then I'll likely take something in at maybe 90 minutes (i.e. gel) and usually at 2 hours I want something solid in my stomach so I eat an energy bar of some kind.  After that, it's probably something every 30 min - hour after that.

Holy depleted glycogen, Bear!

I hope you're taking in calories some other way on the course.

Gatorade, but not really that much. Most people have glycogen stores to last up to two hours, for the most part I can complete a half in that time. I've never come close to bonking in a half...

But then I find that most people "over-nutritionize." Not a bad thing if your stomach (and your wallet) can handle it, just not necessary. If I took five gels in every 1:45+ workout, I'd be a broke SOB. Most of my training efforts of that length are going to be on Gatorade alone.

I take water on almost all runs (anything over 30 minutes - and if it's hot, I take it with me even for just 30 minutes). I take nutrition (gels) on anything lasting more than 1.5 hours. I use the power bar gels with electrolytes - 1 gel every 40 minutes. I drink a gulp of water almost every mile. For some of my longer runs (like 18-20 miles) or if it's hot, I'll take a gel every 30 minutes.

wow, thanks for all the replies! i think its a great idea to be more concerned with time then distance - and i'm also going to do a max HR test tommarow, set up my HR zones and start trying to run in Z2/Z3 like people suggest. i think its going to be painful to run that slow, but the benifits will be worth it.
does anyone know if the polar s120 will beep at you if you go over a certain HR? also, does it come with a chest strap, or does it need one? i currently have a polar F1, which is about the simplest HRM in this universe - all it tells me is elapsed time and avg HR, i get the max just by looking at it when my perceived exertion is high. any other HRM suggestion around ~70-100 $$?

back to eating and drinking: i think if its hot, i'll need to drink at about 1/2 hr or so. with the current weather, i could probably wait until around 45 mins - i kinda felt depleted yesterday (54 min run), which means i wasn't doing my nutrition right.
on fuel belts: do they bounce around when you run, or are they pretty sturdy against your body? i've also seen those water bottles with straps that go on your hands. . .feedback on those?

Thanks for all your help!!

No need to do a max HR test - do an LT test instead. The maxHR test is not only painful but almost entirely useless for your intended use. Also, most would recommend that the bulk of your running is in z1/2 not 2/3.

Not sure about the Polar, but Timex IM 30 lap will beep if you are outside your specificed range - I'm sure most in that price range will as well.

As for FuelBelts, I love mine (6 bottle model) and it doesn't bounce at all - definitely prefer this to running with anything in my hands the entire time.

I'm a fan of the handheld bottles with a loop. I tried doing the fuelbelt route, but it doesn't work with my body shape.

perhaps im just confused on terminology- is an LT test where you warm up for 15 - push hard for 30, then CD for 15 - and record HR in each of those zones?

Sounds like you were just confused on terminology

Warm up (including a few short bursts 20-30" during the warmup) for at least 15'

Run 30' at a pace that is just sustainable for the 30'. You don't want to run too fast in the beginning and fade or be able to have lots left at the end. It will probably take a couple of tests before you're completely happy with pacing the test. Also, after the first 10' of the 30'TT, hit the lap button so you can get the average HR for the last 20'.

Good luck

On drinking...you need to drink before your body tells you to drink in order to stay ahead on your hydrating.  Waiting until 45 minutes (or even 30') to drink is not a good idea.  I drink every 10 minutes whether biking or running.

I think your other questions have been answered.

That seems like a LOT!!! On a 20 mile run I have 2 gels and about 2 servings of acelerade! I would also say go for time.
