Age Group Rank = 2/
Pre-race routine:

Pack the car, shovel down some oatmeal, and hit 7-11 for some caffeine on the way to the race.
Event warmup:

Quick lap on the bike course and a little jogging around.
Run
  • 20m 18s
  • 3.35 miles
  • 06m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was 5K but the front 9-10 of us got directed off course by a volunteer who was more interested in talking on her cell phone then paying attention to what she was supposed to be doing. As a result I ran an extra ~1k on the first lag of the race. I didn't wear a watch so i don't even have mile splits to judge my pace but I was working my way through the field and was in 4th place at 2.5 miles before we got off course. I ended up with the 35th fastest (slowest) run split so that little detour cost my about 30 places on the first run.

What would you do differently?:

Make sure I'm paying attention to the course and not just following the guy in front of me.
Transition 1
  • 35m 25s
Bike
  • 52m 21s
  • 20.5 kms
  • 23.50 km/hr
Comments:

I blew my legs out a bit trying to get back on the run course and I was a aggravated coming out of T1 so it took me the better part of the first loop to settle down and get my cycling legs. Even then I was only able to push 250-260W most of the ride. I guess that's what you get for not riding 2 weeks straight. Eventually I was getting into a groove but this was only a 32k bike so I didn't have a chance to really take advantage of it.
Transition 2
  • 55m 20s
Comments:

I took a very leisurely transition here since I didn't intend to run the last 5K hard. I even made a stop at the aid station on the way out for a refreshing drink :)
Run
  • 21m 19s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

Since this was just supposed to be a fun event I decided to roll the second run relatively easy instead of killing myself trying to regain some positions. I ran a very comfortable 21:19 including stopping at 2 aid stations for a drink and quick chat with the volunteers.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...I actually enjoyed not suffering through the run.
