Out on a run last night. It is dark here around 5:30om in Iowa and long story short, this woman had decided to exit her car the very moment I was passing her car. I spun to avoid the door, but ended up hitting it(not as hard as it could have been). It bounced back and crunched her. Whose fault?

I would take responsiblity for it if she had just pulled up and decided to get out. Obviously I wouldn't have been paying attention. In actuality, she had apparently just been sitting in her car for some reason. Maybe she was out to get a runner? Who knows! No lights were on in the car, nothing.

It was one of those... "could have been a lot worse moments." Nonetheless, everything is still working to a T!

Be careful on those roads peeps. Pay attention and be aware of everything going on around you at all times. I know it is easy to drift off into the zone/la la land, especially on those long runs, but your definitely putting yourself at risk.

Happy and safe training to all! Out!

Ouch! Good to hear you're no worse for wear.

By the way, how visible were you?  I'm assuming you were wearing a reflective vest, etc.... and she was just a space cadet.

I didn't have a vest on, but I do wear tons of all that new reflective running tights and tops! Maybe that is not enough? I've been thinking of getting one of those tiny belt blinkers or running with a head lamp.

Anything to increase my odds won't hurt!

Iowa Action...."I didn't have a vest on, but I do wear tons of all that new reflective running tights and tops! Maybe that is not enough? I've been thinking of getting one of those tiny belt blinkers or running with a head lamp. "

I think you should consider wearing your cape too.

My sister-in-law had the same thing happen, EXCEPT she was on her bike. Broke a couple ribs, got a really bruised up with some road rash. The guy in the car was very apologetic and drove her to the hospital. Ever since then I make sure to give parked cars their due space, even if it means pissing off drivers behind me.

It has only happened to me while I was zipping by on my bike...what a pain that is!  As for the legality of the situation, the person who opened the door is at fault...period, regardless of wether that person has been sitting in the car for a period of time or has just arrived!  The onus is always on the driver or passenger of a vehicle to check to ensure there are no vehicles or persons arpproaching prior to opening their car door.

Man o man,
I couldn't imaging smashing into a car door on a bike. Just a little more momentum in that collision. It'll also make you appreciate those spin classes a bit more! Ouch!
