Subject: Destination Wedding???

I am looking for counsel on a destination wedding. These are my limitations, issues:

1) My two kids have to attend (obviously) so I need a school break. My ex is no fun, so I likely would not get permission to leave the U.S. ruling out the Carribean, Mexico, etc....

2) Neither one of us is rich and likely we will not be. I would like things to be nice but not wedding reality show crazy...

3) We live in upstate NY, but could easily fly anywhere in the lower 50.

 Comments, Suggestions???

I was going to say Jamaica since that is where my wife and I got married, but with not being able to leave the US ends that.

How old are your kids? How long do you plan on being at your destination?

I guess it depeneds what your family likes the most.  Do yoiu have little kids?  You couls always do Disney although I think that's probably expensive.  If you don't want to go far from home there's the White Mountain Resort in NH - I wanted to get married there but decided a destination wedding was going to be too hard.  How about a National Park?  Yellowsotne would be beautiful and fun for the kids.  If you want the Jamaica type feel but can't leave the country you could always do the Keys or somewhere on the west coast of FL - Captiva (South Seas Plantation - one of the top 3 on my list for my wedding), Naples, Marco Island.

Sorry. My kids are 6 and 8 year old boys. We could stay for up to a week. Disney is out. I have been to Sanibel and Captiva and love them. I think booking there might be tough and $$$ because they are so small. NH is interesting, but it is likely going to be winterish and it is cold and depressing there for 8 months of the year....

Keep the info coming!!!

I always say that if I get married I would want to do a destination wedding especially after going to a couple of friends.

My choices

Durango, Colorado

Lake Tahoe

and even Vegas...just not one of the drive through's

.. a really good friend of mine had theirs in Vegas and it was one of the better weddings,  It's was at the Pink Flamingo Hotel which had a nice little chapel out back, flights are relatively cheap, the weather is predictable, and lots of activities to do for adults and kids that don't involve casino's

May be a little $$, but we got married in Maui.  We got hitched at the Chapel at the Grand Wailea, and stayed a couple nghts, but you could always just hire a preacher and go out on a beach somewhere at sunset.  Can probably spend as much or as little as you like.

Shout out for the East Coast of Florida.

Not Naples, but not as expensive.  The beaches are pretty accessible from Jupiter down to Ft. Lauderdale (where they get a little more crowded).

Check out the Marriott in Delray.  Right across from the beach.  Get some rooms, walk across the street to the beach, get married, rent out the chi-chi top of Boston's on the Beach and party with a view of the ocean.  FWIW, Boston's also has a 12 room two story motel attached to it, so you might be able to get the rooms there.  Also look at Crane's Beach House (Old Florida style and gorgeous!).

www.mydelraybeach.com

The kids can play on the beach (rent kayaks, snorkle the Delray Wreck), play at the pool, you can day trip to Disney, the Everglades, be one (or two) of the pretty people on Atlantic Avenue.  This time of year we have the Tree Lighting and next week the Boat Parade up the Intracoastal and the Christmas Parade on Atlantic Ave.  There'd also be awesome kid friendly pizza right around the corner at Pizza Rustica.

The weather has been hot here (low 80's right now) which is 10 degrees above normal for the season.  Hurricane season ends November 30th () and the prices up until then are considered 'off season.'

I have a friend in the wedding industry down here.  Let me know if you want to talk with him for more ideas.

Good luck!

Slight hijack...You are so lucky to live where you do. We are planning to get to Ystone/Tetons this summer. I will definitely get back to Glacier, even if I have to sell a kidney to do so. It seemed like around every bend of the trail was a "OMG, come look at this" view.

Tahoe has a lot to offer for a family trip. Skiing can get kind of pricey for 4 people though. Maybe you can toss in a day of tubing to offset some of the cost. Another thing you might consider is a cruise. If you shop around you can get some really good deals. Vacationstogo.com has worked well for us many times. Try to book adjoining cabins that have a door between them.

Yes, I am very lucky. Everytime I head outdoors to recreate (a lot), I think that.

Oh. And the skiing is also cheap in Montana (everywhere but Big Sky and Whitefish).

Thanks people. All great suggestions. I have some homework now. The only other caveat I will throw out there is the interests of my wife to be are not as "outdoorsy" as mine. She is very supportive of the tri stuff and likes to be outside, but she is not likely to clim a mountain or anyhing like that. She is getting better though

I am doing a 1/2 iron in Tupper Lake just outside Lake Placid in June. I used to live there and work for Outward Bound. She might change her tune after being exposed to such a beautiful area. I know the adirondacks pale in comparison to the Rockies, but it is a start....

Let's see - Depending on what time of year - The Gulf Shores area is a hidden treasure trove that is fairly inexpensive. The water is warm and there are a lot of things for kids to do.

Lake Tahoe is marvelous in the winter months - as is Mamoth Lakes.

We are going snowmobiling in Yellowstone in February - but I think that might be a little pricey for what you are looking for, but it a truly beautiful place for a wedding, no matter what the season.

Too bad about Jamaica - We had our wedding there two years ago. It was awesome. We went to a Beaches resort in Ocho Rios (they allow kids and have a Sesame Street parade etc.) We also had to deal with the not so enthusiastic ex-husband issue, and the laws are pretty set as to what you need to have to legally take your kids. He would have to sign a standard form allowing it, which would have to be notorized and carried with you at all times. You would also have to get them (as well as yourselves) a passport [which everyone should have anyway IMHO]. We thought that we would face a lot of resistance when we were planning as well, but he actually just grumbled a bit and signed the papers. Never hurts to ask.

I know a couple who just eloped a few weeks ago to the Poconos. Their pictures were LOVELY. I think there's a new resort (Cesars?) that does a "package" deal and such, but even then, the restrictions for marriage in PA are pretty relaxed.

I have thought about the traditional escape type wedding to Vegas or the Poconos.  However, I really want my kids to be involved so I ruled it out.  Right now, I would say the front runners would be : Tucson, Florida or a historical plantation or mansion in the VA area......

I appreciate the input. Keep it coming!!!!!!!

Check with bed/breakfast places.  Some are beautiful and have lovely large areas for a wedding.  Call around.

I got married in Key West. We stayed at the Pier House (they have a private beach) and used a wedding planner down there to set everything up. It was rather inexpensive, turned out great, and the beach at sunset was beautiful, as was wifey.

Oohh..Janice has a good idea with the Mariott in Delray.  The kids love it there, there's almost always somehting going on on Atlantic Ave. (hotel is on the corner of A1A and Atlantic.)  Your wife would love it because you can do a little bit of everything - great shopping and the outdoors all in one spot.  And BTers - there's lots of us here.
