Pre-race routine:

Joined up with organizer Gerard Deegan--a buddy of mine from the Celtic Arts Center and an elite duathlete--and two other runners from the Center at the Soka University track. We were joined shortly after that by two members of the Scottish Athletic Assn. of America from the adjacent field where the Highland "heavy" athletics were being contested.
Event warmup:

Stretched and ran about 1.25 mi. w/u

Comments:

As was inevitable, Deegan smoked the rest of us with a time of 5:08, easing up the last 300m. I was pleasantly surprised to not just finish 2nd, but by a margin of over 20 sec.
What would you do differently?:

I'd hoped to run sub-6 min., but my decision to do a 10 mile workout yesterday probably undermined that. But I felt good and didn't miss that goal by much.
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged approx. 600 yds and stretched.

In a spirit of sportsmanship (or masochism, I'm not sure which), the four of us who were entrants from the Celtic Arts Center went over to the Highland athletics field (to which the two SAAA runners had already returned) and each took a round tossing the 16-lb stone. Let's just say that the four CAC runners were no more competitive at heavy athletics than the two SAAA athletes were in the mile run. (For the record, I was 2nd among the four of us with a toss of 19'2".)

Event comments:

This was part of an occasional series of one-mile footraces in connection with area Scottish and Irish festivals, generally (as today) with competitors wearing kilts.
