Age Group Rank = 3/13
Pre-race routine:

***If you are reading this race report, keep in mind this was a REVERSE triathlon - run, bike, then swim last.***

I got there before transition even opened, but that was okay. It was raining when I got there. I did get a good spot for transition. It did stop raining about 30 minutes before race time...not sure exactly when.
Event warmup:

A short jog...probably 1/2 mile.
Swim
  • 11m 40s
  • 350 yards
  • 03m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was AWFUL for me. I thought I could do the swim with my left calf cramp....it immediately got worse on the first lap. I had to step 4 or 5 times on the wall to try to get the cramp out...it did not work. Finally, on the last lap, I just swam using my upper body only and had my foot flexed/flat.
What would you do differently?:

I would have taken time at T2 to stretch out that cramp completely. Even if it took a whole minute, it would have been better than the 2-4 minutes of time it added...if that...of course with this being my first reverse I'm not sure what my time would have been, but the dealing with my cramp did add time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Run to Bike
Bike
  • 58m 26s
  • 17.68 miles
  • 18.15 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a great course!
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

Bike to Swim. There was not a volunteer at this transition area when I passed through...and I was uncertain where to enter to go to the pool...there was no one right in front of me...finally a spectator helped me...it added a tad of time, but was not bad.
What would you do differently?:

I would have stretched my left calf....to see if I could have completely gotten rid of my leg cramp.
Run
  • 27m 53s
  • 3.35 miles
  • 08m 19s  min/mile
What would you do differently?:

I probably could have pushed harder. I was uncertain how to pace myself in this reverse tri.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

My calf cramp. Also, this was my second triathlon, first USAT event, and first reverse...so it was a learning experience for me.

Event comments:

The race was a lot of fun. The race directors were very friendly. It was nice to get a little medal for my 3rd finish in my AG...I am however disappointed in my performance at the end with the swim.

You had a great race, Bonny.  Did you get any hardware for placing 3rd in your AG!?  Regardless, that's a great result for your first USAT event!

Don't worry about your swim.  It'll be first for most other tris and you'll be fresher for it.  Your calves probably just weren't used to swimming after running and biking for over an hour!

You should be proud!

Great race and first tri!

Bummer on the cramp, I often get those if I swim right after running.

Great race!  I too have had some calf cramps while swimming, and it's not fun at all.  You should definitely be commended for pushing through.

Congrats!
