kmurray - 2008-04-25 3:45 PM I'm a first timer...intermediate distance in Keuka... Any helpful hints/suggestions?
(calling me crazy for beginning with the int. distance does not qualify
)
Having never attended a triathlon event before, I have no idea what the transition areas will be like, how I should set it up, etc. ?
Lots of people start with Olympics. Ron, the founder of BT did an Olympic as his first triathlon which led to the creation of this site.
So, while doing an Olympic as your first race might not mean you're crazy it is at least indicative of the onset of mental illness.
This will probably sound absurd to you veterans, but I am nervous about wearing the wetsuit and actually having to take it off (I'm a wakeboarder and it usually takes 2 + people to tear it off. It's an ugly struggle!)
Do not wear a wakeboarding wetsuit for an Oly distance swim. It's not designed for swimming and you will get very tired very quickly. Seriously. Try swimming 1600 yards straight in a pool while wearing it.
Having said that, the water will be cold. It always is at this race and you will want a wetsuit. Have you looked into renting one? Tri Running and Walking in Victor rents them if you're in the area.
and then put on socks and sneakers and helmet? How do I cut down on transition times?
Practice. Here's a good article on setting up your transition area. Here's my swim to bike training video. Also practice the bike to run transition. Do bricks (bike/run workouts). Race day is not the time to find out what it feels like to run off of the bike.
Alrighty, I know I'll probably have a number to wear...do I bring the belt to put it on?
Yup. They'll give you a few numbers. One for your helmet, one for your bike and one to wear on the run. The run number will go on the belt. I like to put mine on after I get off the bike, but some people wear them on the bike with the number facing backwards.
I'll be wearing a BT trisuit and riding a yellow Cervelo. Be sure to say Hi.
