Just to let people know that I have looked at these websites.  Keuka is an age group national qualifier (or something like that) this year at Int distance so I imagine will fill up faster than usual.

Cayuga Int distance is cancelled for 2008 so they can concentrate on sprint distance which is a national age group qualifier for sprint.

I'm already registered for Cayuga. Didn't know about Keuka Lake. I was kind of hoping to make that one a last minute decision...

I'm kinda bummed about Cayuga. I did the intermediate course last year and the event was a blast, well organized, and on the right weekend to be my target 'A' race for the summer.

Now I think I'll either have to stick with the shorter race this year or find a different Oly and the time to train for it =p

Registered for the Keuka Oly.

Love this freshwater swimming stuff. SoCal can keep their Pacific Ocean and the maneaters who cruise their shores!

Had to withdraw from this one, owing to work travel. Bummer.

Working out a revised summer schedule now.

I'm a first timer...intermediate distance in Keuka...

Any helpful hints/suggestions? (calling me crazy for beginning with the int. distance does not qualify)

Having never attended a triathlon event before, I have no idea what the transition areas will be like, how I should set it up, etc. ?

This will probably sound absurd to you veterans, but I am nervous about wearing the wetsuit and actually having to take it off (I'm a wakeboarder and it usually takes 2 + people to tear it off. It's an ugly struggle!) and then put on socks and sneakers and helmet? How do I cut down on transition times?

Alrighty, I know I'll probably have a number to wear...do I bring the belt to put it on?

Thanks for your help (and patience with my questions) and advice in advance. I'm sure I'll have more questions as June 8th nears...

Lots of people start with Olympics. Ron, the founder of BT did an Olympic as his first triathlon which led to the creation of this site.

So, while doing an Olympic as your first race might not mean you're crazy it is at least indicative of the onset of mental illness. Wink

Do not wear a wakeboarding wetsuit for an Oly distance swim. It's not designed for swimming and you will get very tired very quickly. Seriously. Try swimming 1600 yards straight in a pool while wearing it.

Having said that, the water will be cold. It always is at this race and you will want a wetsuit. Have you looked into renting one? Tri Running and Walking in Victor rents them if you're in the area.

Practice. Here's a good article on setting up your transition area. Here's my swim to bike training video. Also practice the bike to run transition. Do bricks (bike/run workouts). Race day is not the time to find out what it feels like to run off of the bike.

Alrighty, I know I'll probably have a number to wear...do I bring the belt to put it on?

Yup. They'll give you a few numbers. One for your helmet, one for your bike and one to wear on the run. The run number will go on the belt. I like to put mine on after I get off the bike, but some people wear them on the bike with the number facing backwards.

I'll be wearing a BT trisuit and riding a yellow Cervelo. Be sure to say Hi.

YOU ARE A LIFESAVER, MIKE! Thanks for all the tips.

I'll be sure to watch the video and read the article.

The one good thing...I always bike before I run. Guess I've been doing brick workouts the whole time and never called them that. I'll continue to do this.

Again, I can't thank you enough! I'll definitely say hi if I see you. You're a little difficult to make out in your pic. The yellow Cervelo and BT trisuit should help.

Feeling much more relaxed,
Karen

MIKE"S THE BOMB!!!! ALL BOW TO MIKE!!!! WE ARE NOT WORTHY!!!

BTW Mike, nice touches on the GPS uploading features.

There will be a lot of BTers at all of the finger lakes races. We'll have to plan a meeting place the week of the race! Some of the best times at these races are putting faces to the sreen names and avatars!!

WittyCityGirl - 2008-05-27 1:54 PM Anyone rented a wetsuit from the places mentioned above?

I rented from them for the mini-mussel last year (plus I purchase a lot of my running stuff from them as well).  Very small, family run operation.  Very supportive of local races and racers.  I rented for my first race and purchased the same suit from them afterwards (they apply the rental fee towards the purchase price).  The only thing that may be a turn off, is (this was last years policy so double check) they only rent sleeveless suits.

I will be quite surprised if you are not happy with them.

I haven't rented from them but they are my local tri shop and are very helpful and friendly - as Ken said, family run.  I bought my wetsuit (Nineteen) from them and I buy most of my other tri gear there too including running shoes (they do gait analysis etc)

MIKE,

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Keuka was awesome! First tri, oly distance, blazing hot...AWESOME! I DID IT!

Thank you so much for all of your advice and the time you took to reply to my questions. I felt so prepared and actually knew more than I thought. I went to the endurance factor clinic the day before...everything he covered I had already learned from people like you on this site or from Triathlon 101. I'm already counting down the days until my next tri in August...it's a Formula 1 race in Buffalo and then the Finger Lakes tri in September! I find myself wishing that the tri season was all year round!

Training for me starts again today!

Thanks again!
Karen
