Subject: SMELLY SHOES
I did an Adventure Race this weekend, and weather was awful. NOW my Salamon X3's are SUPER SMELLY! THEY SMELL LIKE MOLD! HOW DO I FIX THIS?? I know that if I were to put them on again my feet would smell 10x's worse than they already do! Is this something that I should just run through the wash w/ a gentle cycle, and use NIK WAX to wash them (shoes are Goretex)?

Help

Nik Wax will get your shoes good and clean, but in my experience it doesn't take away the stink. (Also ... have you used it before? I don't think it would be any good in a washer ...)

A few things to try:

- scrub 'em really well inside and out (follow the directions) with nik wax, then leave them out IN THE SUN to dry (make sure to take them in if it's not sunny or they'll just get damp again). If you have no sun, this obviously won't work.

- If that doesn't work, or you have no sun, you could toss 'em in the dryer on a VERY low heat setting for a long time, with some dryer sheets in there.

- Then try sealing them in a plastic bag for a day or two with a bunch of dryer sheets and baking soda. (DO NOT do this if they are in the least bit damp!)

That's all I got! Good luck!

I have figured out the trick to this!!! My Nike's smelled like death after a season of races with no socks in the Texas heat. Here's what i did:

-Poor rubbing alcohol inside...all over
-Dump half a box of baking soda inside the shoes. (Cover the shoe)
-seal in plastic bag
-put in freezer for 48 hours
-take out and wash

DUNZO! I swear by it.

You could just keep them. I remember seeing on the news one night about some contest for the worlds smelliest shoe. Kinda like the worlds ugliest dog.

My tri bike shoes smell bad from a weekend of riding in the rain and stupidly trying to dry them out  in a low temp oven so I could ride some more. Now whenever they get wet they smell bad.

We soak them in a water/bleach solution which does the trick until the next time they get wet and then we repeat.

I have regular bike shoes I now wear for most of my training so I just race sprints & olys in them and train a couple times before those races.

Penguin sports wash works great on tech fabrics, it may work on the shoes too.

I find that baking soda works really well.

And in terms of preventative maintenance, I always stuff my shoes w/ newsprint when they get wet, and place them upside down near the heater. The longer they stay wet, the smellier they are. The newsprint is super absorbent too! Yeah recycling!

Edit: Because heater and dryer aren't strictly the same thing, genius.

A nice bleach bath does the trick.

Very liberal application of old fashioned Lysol. It kills 99.9% (per their label) of icky stuff, including Athlete's Foot. Don't be afraid to use too much, just get the insides good and wet with it. Take out the insoles and hit both sides of them, as well as the foot bed.
