Dont know if this is the right place to post this, but am thinking of getting a family friendly road tandem, something the kids can fit on and grow into, as a Christmas gift to the family. Burley Periscope maybe. Any tandem riders out there? Anyone have a periscope? Any pros/cons or other suggestions for such a bike? Kids are 10 and 12, and I want something they can use for a couple years.

There's something you can add to an adult tandem called a "kid-back" bottom bracket. It bolts to the stoker seat tube so you can put it anywhere along the tube (for height adjustment), and has a third chain that sync's it with the standard crank below. Don't know if that's the right thing... Might not allow for a tall enough rider (I think they're mostly meant for younger riders), but might be worth checking out.

We used to have a Family Tandem. It was really really tiny and folded up well for packing. My mom used to take us kids on bike tours (Bike Virginia, Cycle Across MD) on them. I also distinctly remember going down a huge hill and hearing change fall out of my pocket. At the next rest stop we realized they were the screws holding the bike together, and we could bend the two halves up and down about 10 degrees. I thought it was great in my 10 year old mind, looking back that's kind of terrifying.

It got kind of boring staring at the back of my parents' shirt, and I also have a great memory of my dad hauling @$$ up a mountain with my brother on the back, who casually asked what the difference between an atom and a molecule was. My dad almost left him on the side of the road.

Been looking on ebay for a decent price on a used tandem for over a year, haven't found anything worth having for under $1,000. There's a triple (frameset only) on there for $450, a little too big for me: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110205140539&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1123

Rode with a couple last week who had a custom-made Serotta titanium frame tandem, which I imagine cost ~$10K. They had it going on, it was fun to watch their teamwork.

BTW, a quick google search showed that the Periscope is made by CoMotion, not Burley...

My wife and I enjoy riding a tandem.  We rented one almost every weekend this season and are planning on buying one, a Pecco w/Ultegra, shortly for 2000CND.  It is quite similar to the KHS Milano but has much better components.

What is it that you had in mind with regards to the tandem?  Were you thinking of buying one tandem for your boys or 2 tandems for you and the wife to ride with the boys?  KHS has a few Tandemania models that range from about $1000 for the Sport to $1400 for the Cross and the Milano for around $1800.  The Co-Motion Persicope is a fine bike but it will set you back $4000 or more.   Of course, if money is no object, look at Calfee and Santana.  Here is a site for Tandem Cycle Works of Colorado to give you an idea:

Have fun.  My wife and I have a Burley tandem that we ride (not as often as I would like).

It allows us to ride together without the "you are going too fast" issues.  If you are going to ride with your kids on the back, make sure you do the crank extender thing like someone else mentioned.
