Subject: Bike Trainer Tire Chewing Problem
Hi All,

I just recently started training significantly more on a stationary bike trainer and noticed a slight wearing away (designated by the strip of flatness in the middle going all the way around my tire) of my tire. First, is this a bad thing that I should be worried about (as in oh crap, I'm gonna get a flat or worse)? And second, what can I do to avoid this problem? I've heard that getting a secondary tire specifically for trainers is what some people do?

Thanks!

Very common experience. You can sacrifice a few cheapo tires, or you may want to consider a trainer specific tire.

Either buy a cheap tire (don't bother with the "trainer specific" models IMO--just go cheap).  Or when you decide a tire is no longer road-worthy but still has some life in it, you can designate it for trainer detail until it wears out.

I have one of these. It is wonderful. It's very hard rubber and does not get chewed up. Ever.

If you have a spare wheel laying around then i would suggest the Conti trainer tire.  It's a nice hard rubber and will give you more consistent results without the need to crank down the drum pressure.  You definitely don't want to ride it outside though.

Definitely go with the continental trainer tire. Keeping your tire properly inflated will also help avoid excess wear.

I've got the Continental Ultra Sport Hometrainer Tire (see link). Solves the problem with shredding regular road tires. BTW - make sure you use a steel/trainer skewer.

I use the Conti trainer tire and I have been using it for over 2 years. It's still in great shape.
